We are recruiting one Trust Fellow Doctor in Critical Care Medicine to work on our ICU ward in Yeovil, in the South West of England. This post is available from 2nd August 2023 to 6th August 2024, in line with national rotation dates set by NHS Employers.

The posts include a proportion of time ring-fenced for personal development and training. This is approximately 25% of the basic rota pattern. For anaesthetists, this can be time spent in theatre, in training or solo lists as desired, working at a level appropriate to their experience, in order to retain or gain anaesthetic skills. For non anaesthetists, this time can be spent in any part of the hospital where suitable training opportunities can be identified and agreed, in line with the doctor's career aspirations.
Main duties of the job
Care of patients on the ICU/HDU ward, managed together as one unit. The patients are predominantly emergency medical and surgical patients. The bulk of the case mix is conditions such as respiratory failure, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, cardiovascular instability, cardiovascular failure, abdominal sepsis, post laparotomy care, multi-organ failure, acute renal failure, and impaired consciousness.
To undertake appropriate clinical procedures (with support, supervision and training as required) such as: tracheal intubation, rapid sequence induction of anesthesia, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support, chest drains, insertion of central venous (CVP) lines using ultrasound guidance.
Review of new and existing patients referred to the critical care service, under the the supervision of a consultant.
The post holder will be required to cover ICU/HDU during daytimes, evenings, nights and weekends, as detailed in the rota.
To participate in audits and current research projects. These are available through individual Consultants. Several research projects are in-progress on the unit.
To attend the active postgraduate programme with weekly lectures, radiology, medical and pathology meetings and medical unit presentations.
To contribute to the active journal club. There are 'bleep-free' obligatory sessions for teaching and these are part of the weekly timetable.
To participate in the teaching of Foundation Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students.
About us
Our ICU unit consists of 11 beds, which are used flexibly as a combination of 5 intensive care (ICU) beds and 6 high dependency (HDU) beds. The critical care Trust Fellows will report to the consultant anesthetist / intensivist who is on duty for the critical care unit. There are two specialty doctor anesthetists resident in the hospital 24 hours per day (working in theatres and obstetric theatres), who will support the Trust Fellows with emergency procedures as needed.
