Governance Lead

Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
This
is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic professional
to join Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (RSCH) as the
RD&I Governance Lead. This is a fixed term 12 month role. We are looking
for a highly-motivated
individual who would thrive on the challenge of working in clinical research
within the NHS. Applicants should have proven experience in research governance,
management and performance monitoring/reporting.
The RD&I
Governance lead is a key member of the R&D management team, working
alongside senior colleagues in the Trust and the NIHR Kent Surrey and Sussex
Clinical Research Network to develop and manage the research portfolio.
You should have the
excellent communication and leadership skills and will lead and manage the
R&D Governance team and be the point of call for operational research
support services within the Trust and also provide governance support and
advice for research studies conducted by local teams in non-NHS settings. The RD Governance Lead has an important role
in project managing the set-up and conduct of clinical research conducted by the
Trust in line with statuary obligations as well as performance against national
/ local targets, standards and KPIs.
Main duties of the job
Research areas that are
particularly strong at RSCH reflect the caseload of the hospital. We are a specialist tertiary cancer centre,
offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to a population of
up to two million. We are a referral
centre for oncology, hepatopancreaticobiliary, oesophagogastric,
maxillofacial/ENT, urology (robotic) and gynae-oncological surgery.
We
work in partnership with the NIHR Kent Surrey and Sussex Clinical Research
Network which is hosted by RSCH. Many of the regional specialty leads are
based at RSCH. We also work closely with
industry and recruit to a wide range of commercial research studies. Excellence
in clinical research is a key priority for RSCH and an important enabler for
the achievement of excellence and realisation of the Trusts strategic
objectives.
There
are longstanding connections with the University of Surrey which is adjacent to
RSCH and a wealth of research collaborations including studies running between
the organisations, academics with joint appointments and close working with the
Universitys Research Integrity Governance and Innovation Office

The Research Governance Team Leader will provide the project management function for and
act as a focal point for coordination between the clinical research departments, research
support staff, NIHR staff and Finance staff with regards to research study set up and ongoing
delivery.
The team leader will also provide a Research Governance advisory function to KSS CRN and
non-NHS researchers and non-NHS organisations hosting clinical research. They will provide
the Research Governance Systems and processes to enable the set-up and progress of
research activity in these non-NHS settings.
The post holder will be expected to undertake duties in an independent manner without the
need for direct supervision and be capable of using and taking initiative.
This is a key position managing the research information systems used by staff working on
clinical research within the hospital (EDGE). The Research Governance Lead will work
closely with NIHR staff and research staff across the hospital and be responsible for
ensuring that the needs of research staff are met. The Research Governance Team Leader
will act as a focal point for communication between the clinical research departments,
research support staff, NIHR staff and Finance staff. The post holder will be expected to
undertake duties in an independent manner without the need for direct supervision and be
capable of using and taking initiative.
The post holder will be responsible for the provision of timely, appropriate, and on-going
research governance management of NIHR portfolio research studies hosted by non-NHS
organisations within KSS CRN. The post holder will provide advice and support for non-NHS
organisations hosting NIHR portfolio clinical research, for researchers, host-organisation
staff and KSS CRN colleagues to support them in their understanding and implementation of
Research Governance through systems and processes.
The role involves using an in depth knowledge of research methodology and knowledge of
the requirements of local, national and international research regulations.

- Extensive administrative experience, preferably in NHS Trust, university or clinical research environment.
- Proven knowledge and understanding of (clinical) research issues such as research governance, ethical review, Medicines for Human Use Regulations, etc.
- Significant experience of working in a research support environment and/or understanding of NHS R&D environment, research funding systems and clinical trial methodology and logistics.
- Experience of multidisciplinary working and collaborating with other agencies.
- Significant experience of governance, audit or monitoring systems.
- Management of resources.
- Significant with reviewing legal documentation and negotiation.
- Knowledge of the NHS and issues in referral hospitals and understanding of the requirements of clinical services.
- At least 1 years experience of the National Institute for Health Research Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permission (NIHR-CSP) system.
