Job summary
We are pleased to advertise this exciting paediatric clinical
teaching fellow post for the academic year 2023-2024. It is an excellent
opportunity for a current or aspiring paediatric trainee looking to gain out of
programme experience in medical education in a welcoming and supportive
environment.
It is a 12 month fixed term post commencing on 04.09.23 and will
involve 0.6 WTE as a paediatric clinical teaching fellow and 0.4 WTE working
clinically in the paediatric department at SHO or middle grade level depending
on the successful applicants previous clinical experience. The postholder will
be encouraged to undertake a postgraduate certificate in medical education and
must have a licence to practice from the GMC as well as experience delivering
undergraduate medical education.

Main duties of the job
Ensuring a cohesive teaching programme covering
the breadth of the undergraduate paediatric curriculum is delivered to each
cohort of students
Delivery of seminars and bedside teaching to
medical students and physician associate students
Delivery of seminars and bedside teaching to
medical students and physician associate students
Supporting the pre-existing student simulation
programme
Assessing students through work-based
assessments and student-led case presentations
Mentoring and support of medical students and
physician associate students to help promote their well-being
Facilitating the paediatric attachments for
medical students and physician associate students, including coordination of
timetables for both teaching and clinical activities, welcome, induction and
wrap up weeks
Organising a paediatric mock OSCE for the
medical students during their final week of placement
The successful postholder will be encouraged to
complete additional training in medical education during their time in post,
for example a postgraduate certificate in medical education (if they do not
already possess an equivalent qualification). Funding would be allocated for
completion of the University of Surrey course or a contribution would be
provided towards an alternative course (e.g. St Georges University).

involve 0.6 WTE as a paediatric clinical teaching fellow and 0.4 WTE working

to practice from the GMC and experience delivering undergraduate medical
education. The post would be an ideal opportunity for a current or aspiring

post was launched in 2022 and allows the successful applicant to develop their
interest in medical education, in a welcoming and supportive paediatric
environment.
The
Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is a multi-site acute and community Trust,
based in Guildford, which serves a population of more than 336,000 across south
west Surrey. Around 90,000 patients are admitted for treatment per year, around
75,000 attend the emergency department and we deliver around 3,200 babies per
year.
The
Trust plays a significant role in the training of both medical students and
physician associate students, working with Southampton, St Georges and Surrey
Universities. The
post holder will work closely with the other Clinical Teaching Fellows.
The
paediatric department has a well-established and successful medical education
programme which consistently receives excellent feedback from students. The
paediatric undergraduate leads are supported by the wider medical team to
deliver a wide-ranging teaching programme and students are encouraged to
participate in all aspects of the paediatric department.
Since
September 2021, the department has been a hub for Southampton medical students
undertaking their paediatric placement. We have redesigned our undergraduate
education programme to provide a more structured and cohesive 8-week paediatric
placement for medical students. In addition, we host Surrey University
physician associate students as well as a number of students undertaking
special study units and electives in paediatrics.
The
successful applicant will play a central role in the continued development of
the paediatric hub, welcome of students and delivery of a dynamic, interactive
departmental teaching programme. The education component of the post will
account for 60% of the postholders time, with the remainder of time spent
undertaking clinical work in the paediatric department. There is no fixed out
of hours commitment for this post at present, but there may be opportunities
for additional locum out of hours shifts. The post would be ideal for a
paediatric trainee looking to gain out of programme experience in medical
education or for an aspiring paediatrician prior to entering a paediatric
