Job summary

The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is looking for an empathetic and motivated individual to join our Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service as an Assistant Youth Worker.

The post holder will be expected to have a strong understanding of person-centred care, with the ability to build supportive relationships with young people aged 16-30 facing cancer.

Applicants should be proactive, well-organised, IT literate, and flexible to work occasional evenings or weekends.

This post requires an experienced, forward thinking, motivated and ambitious person whose contributions will be recognised by a dynamic, professional and friendly team.

Main duties of the job

To provide direct, compassionate, and empowering support to young people aged 16-30 who are living with or beyond cancer. This role focuses on building trusting relationships with young patients, creating a safe, engaging, and age-appropriate environment that supports their emotional, social, and practical needs throughout their cancer experience. To support the youth worker with a wide range of appropriate recreational activities.

To develop positive, trusting relationships with young people to support their emotional well-being, encourage self-expression, and promote autonomy.

To participate in the TYA Cancer Multidisciplinary Team using specific skills to contribute to the care and understanding of the young people, their families, and carer.

To ensure the day care and outpatient environment is young people friendly and stimulating

To collaborate with the Youth Worker in providing tailored activities and peer support opportunities that help reduce isolation and foster resilience.

To encourage and help to develop a peer group network of support.

To support the youth worker with signposting TYAs to accessible grants and benefits when theyre struggling with cost of living

To support youth worker with guiding and mediating for the TYA and their family with general

To support patients to advocate for themselves and their best interests within the team and wider hospital. To advocate for them where this is not possible.

To support the Youth Worker maintain and manage social media platforms to inform, connect, and engage young people in a safe and supportive way.
