Special Care Baby Unit

We are looking to recruit motivated, dedicated and caring band 3 Neonatal Clinical Support Worker with recent experience working in Special Care Baby Unit/Transitional Care/ Maternity Unit to join our friendly team. The specialist knowledge and experience you have gained will allow you to safely prioritise and manage care of up to 4 babies requiring special care, as per BAPM guideline. You will be supported at all times by the registered nurse on duty.

You will need to prove your genuine interest in caring for the neonates and their families requiring special care.

Our SCBU has 10 cots and we care for high dependency and special care babies of 31 weeks gestation and above. We pride ourselves in working together to provide family-centred care. We are the first neonatal unit in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Operational Delivery Network to achieve both BFI Baby Friendly Accreditation and Bliss Baby Charter Gold Award.

The candidate must be able to support the family unit whilst caring for the baby. We in turn will support you by providing a comprehensive induction programme in addition to the support from Practice Development Team and colleagues. If you are newly qualified, you will join the Trust Preceptorship Programme.

This is a permanent contract, internal rotation as standard. We will consider part-time, please discuss hours at interview.

Main duties of the job

1. The neonatal clinical support worker must assist the Registered Neonatal Nurse/Midwife to maintain a high standard of care.

2. The neonatal clinical support worker must be accountable to the Registered Neonatal Nurses/Midwives that she is working with.

3. The neonatal clinical support worker will maintain the dignity of patients and parents/carers at all times, respecting their individual needs and wishes.

4. The neonatal clinical support worker will observe changes in the condition of babies, take the prescribed actions and report promptly and accurately to the Nurse/Midwife in Charge.

5. The neonatal clinical support worker must be aware of the Trust guidance and policies on all aspects of Health and Safety including Infection control and COSHH (care of substances hazardous to health

Job responsibilities

The neonatal clinical support worker will prioritise the workload, and participate in nursing procedures following instruction / education and at the discretion of a qualified Neonatal Nurse/Midwife. This includes:

  • Carrying out regular observations of temperature, pulse, respirations and heart rate. This also includes oxygen saturation rate when requested. The findings should be recorded on the observation chart and reported to the Neonatal Nurse responsible for overall care of the neonate.
  • Undertaking blood tests on neonates for:

- monitoring of glucose levels in babies on the BM protocol

- Serum bilirubin levels

- Newborn Blood spot screening test

  • Undertaking naso/oro-gastric tube feeding. The opportunity exists to develop this competency following training and assessment.
  • Collection of microbiology samples as requested, such as eye swabs, urine and stool samples.
  • Assist Registered Nurses/Midwives and mothers in caring for babies undergoing phototherapy.
