Job summary

Due to the new national review of POSCU services we have the exciting opportunity to expand our team. The Royal Surrey County Hospital is moving towards being an Enhanced Level A POSCU for Children and Teenagers with Cancer. To support the development of this service, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to undertake the role of Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist for Children and Teenagers with Cancer.You will need to be an RSCN / RN Child and have a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience in paediatric nursing at senior band 5 or band 6, a 1st Level Nursing degree and experience of caring for children and teenagers with cancer and their families. An accredited post registration chemotherapy qualification in this specialist area of nursing practice is desirable or the willingness to undertake the training. The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse and Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist for Children and Teenagers with Cancer, the Children's Community Nurses and the Cancer Site Specific Nurse Specialists at the Principle Treatment Centres to continue to develop a high quality service for children and teenagers with cancer and their families. You will work as part of the team to ensure the safe care of the patients on the Children's Ward and administration of chemotherapy. You will have a key role in the development and delivery of teaching programmes for staff.

Main duties of the job

To be key member of the Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) multidisciplinary team (MDT), caring for children and teenagers (0-19 years) with cancer and their families.

Excellent communication skills will be needed to work across both professional and organisational boundaries in order to ensure co-ordinated patient care for these children, teenagers and their families. You should also be confident and self-motivated utilising the benefit of your clinical knowledge and experience and be able to act as a resource to all levels of healthcare professionals and support staff.

Through training, study and experience the post holder will be supported to provide a highly specialised Paediatric Oncology nursing service, within the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, to all children and teenagers with cancer and their families. The post holder will gain experience by working closely with the POSCU Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team, the community nursing team and the CNS teams at the Principle Treatment Centres (PTCs) including the Royal Marsden Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College Hospital, London.

In addition the post holder will be expected to contribute to the management and development of the Paediatric Oncology service by:

  • Proactively working towards becoming an expert in their field, holding additional specialist knowledge and experience.
  • Providing formal and informal teaching to students and clinical colleagues
