Job summary

The Department of Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford provides medical physics services to the hospital, especially to St Luke's Cancer Centre, and to a number of surrounding hospitals. The work of the Department covers six main areas: the National Coordinating Centre for the Physics of Mammography (NCCPM); Nuclear Medicine Physics and Radiopharmacy; Radiotherapy Physics; the Regional Radiation Protection Service; Scientific Computing and Technical Services. The Department is administratively in the Strategic Business Unit of Oncology and Medical Physics.The Scientific Computing Section provides the specialised scientific and clinical computing support that is essential for the safe and effective delivery of many of the Department's services. This includes the management of commercial and proprietary software and solutions and the design, development and support of clinical, image processing and administration systems and databases.

Main duties of the job

The Scientific Computing Section provides the specialised scientific and clinical computing support that is essential for the safe and effective delivery of many of the Department's services. This includes the management of commercial and proprietary software and solutions and the design, development, and support of clinical, image processing and administration systems and databases. These can range from department-wide information systems to small, stand-alone or web-based programs. The Section is also responsible for providing and supporting necessary backup routines and computing hardware, including cloud infrastructure. The section has considerable influence in ensuring that the department is compliant with all IG and security mandates throughout all of its computing activities. The section is also involved in further the aims of the Medical Physics department through collaborative research projects, supporting students and trainees.

Job responsibilities

This post requires expertise and experience in applied computer sciences with a focus on web development.

The main duties are to undertake development of bespoke software tools, web portals as well as assist with specialised and complex systems development and support.

These systems are varied and involve interaction with ongoing procedures and research projects within Medical Physics. Interactions with varying disciplines and scientific aims will drive the post holder to be flexible and dynamic in their approaches.

The post holder will be required to co-ordinate their development on multiple heterogeneous projects at once.

This will include writing or enhancing systems throughout Medical Physics and beyond, developing web-based tools, assisting with clinical database development projects, and sharing in the support of the compute and storage infrastructure.

Additional responsibilities include providing support and working on research projects to enhance and further the activities within the Medical Physics department and scientific computing.
