Job summary

This appointment arises from the reconfiguration of middle grade duties within the department and has been created to support a very busy surgical department which is receiving increasing numbers of patient referrals, and to help meet the NHS National Plan targets to reduce waits for both inpatients and outpatients. The post will be based at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust (RSFT).

A full range of oral and maxillofacial surgery is practised in the department, which provides the major maxillofacial and oral surgery referral centre for a population of approximately 1.4 million. In addition to the practice of dentoalveolar surgery and maxillofacial trauma, there is a heavy commitment to surgery for the correction of facial deformity and head and neck malignancy. Microsurgical reconstruction and laser surgery are also routinely practised. There is extensive skin malignancy treated within the department.

There are close relationships with all specialties within the Royal Surrey Hospital, particularly with the Regional Radiotherapy Unit and the departments of dermatology and ENT. There is a maxillofacial lab on site, a dedicated maxillofacial operating theatre and a ward is shared with ENT. There is a well-run Day Surgery Unit and oral and maxillofacial surgery is the major user of this facility. There is a dedicated maxillofacial theatre for the treatment of local anaesthetic cases and minor maxillofacial trauma.

Main duties of the job

The Specialty Doctor will under Consultant supervision provide care and oversight to maxillofacial and skin patients. Undertake fixed outpatient and local anesthetic theatre commitments both at The Royal Surrey Hospital and at Haslemere Hospital. Work flexibly to provide DCC activities to accommodate general anaesthetic through our main theatre complex. The Trust operates an 8642 operational model for theatre uptake and utilisation. Ensuring activity does not decrease during periods of annual leave
