Job summary

Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appointment a Registrar in Geriatric Medicine.

These posts are not recognised UK training posts. However, the post-holders will have a named supervisor, and will be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities within the Trust and clinical specialties.

Successful applicants will support specialty teams in Acute Medicine and Acute Frailty in the management of their in-patient & out-patient workload, and will participate in out-of-hours cover on the registrar rota. The specific rotation preferences will be discussed with candidates at interview.

The post is fixed term until October 2024.

The division of Access and Medicine has been rated as Outstanding in the recent CQC visit in 2020. The Medicine Division at the Royal Surrey is organised into a number of individual Strategic Business Units, which include inpatient, outpatient and day case services. Inpatient medicine is organised in a specialty ward-based structure, with triage from the emergency assessment unit to ward based specialty care based upon clinical need. The Royal Surrey is a District General Hospital, with regional speciality referrals from across the South Coast, and incorporates the St Luke's Cancer centre, as well as one of the largest ICUs in the region.

Main duties of the job

The post holder works alongside the acute Frailty team based at the Royal Surrey and will work in several areas including with the

Acute Frailty team in the emergency department (ED) and emergency assessment unit (EAU)

Frailty same day emergency care unit (FSDEC)

Hospital at Home service

This post also contributes to the general medical registrar on call rota.

Supporting the Consultants in leading and supervising the team in the day to day management of patients following a comprehensive geriatric assessment approach.

Team members should attend a daily huddle or SAFER board round to ensure prioritization and efficient use of time.

Working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are managed effectively and efficiently

Proactively liaising with patients families / next of kin (with patients permission where they have capacity or otherwise in their best interests) to ensure an understanding of frailty and management plan

Supporting junior doctors in their training and completing assessments

All members of the team are responsible for ensuring patient flow and effective bed usage by prioritizing discharge planning / completion of Electronic discharge letters

Supporting the managers with rotas / leave

Engaging with quality improvement work and data capture
