Job summary
An enthusiastic and committed ophthalmic technician is required to work in the ophthalmology department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.
Working in a friendly modern environment this is a new role at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the department providing high quality care for all our patients.
The post holder will carry out ophthalmic technical and imaging procedures including OCT, retinal fundus imaging, visual field, visual acuity assessments and intraocular pressure checks. Please see the attached job description for more information about this role.
Previous experience in ophthalmology would be an advantage but not essential as full training will be given.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to work as an ophthalmic technician, part of, and contributing to a multi-disciplinary ophthalmology team at the Royal Surrey and its peripheral sites.
The post holder will undertake various ophthalmic diagnostic tests required during busy clinics and will manage own time and workload around these clinics. Any forseen problems or issues the post holder will immediately discuss with Medical Illustration Manager, or senior staff, before there is an impact on the clinics.
Work with the clinical photographers and ophthalmology staff to continually develop and improve the service provided.

Job responsibilities
To undertake ophthalmic technician duties including (but not limited to) visual acuity assessment, perform pupil dilation, OCT and retinal imaging, visual fields testing, corneal topography and biometry. As technology/ equipment evolves the role will expand to include use of new technologies training will be provided when required.
Perform Ocular Coherence Tomography to provide the required analysis to aid diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of various ophthalmic conditions and pathology.
Fundus Photography: to take clear and accurate photographs of various eye conditions and record the results on the computer database (ophthalmic PACS) demonstrating knowledge of the more frequently seen ophthalmic conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, choroidal naevi and glaucoma.
The post holder will have excellent communication skills - verbal, non-verbal and written and ability to give clear instructions to all patients including those of varying age, mental and physical abilities and states of anxiety.
- Ophthalmic Imaging activities require highly developed skills where significant levels of hand-eye and sensory co-ordination are essential. The post holder will be required to move equipment, patients in wheelchairs and help patients with poor mobility from wheelchair to instrument. Imaging and diagnostic work may require concentration and working in restricted positions for long periods of time. For these reasons the post holder should be physically fit.
The post holder will be able to recognise ophthalmic abnormalities and ensure that they are appropriately scanned and/or photographed to aid clinical diagnosis and observation.
Will be able to demonstrate imaging techniques to nursing staff and student nurses.
Maintain accurate records for all clinics undertaken.
To undertake administrative tasks associated with the role, following departmental guidelines and procedures.
To use patient management systems as required.
To ensure safe use and maintenance of all equipment.
To ensure equipment is cleaned in line with infection control policies.
To work within established local guidelines, protocols and procedures.
Undertake training, as required, in ophthalmic imaging and technical procedures under the supervision of senior clinical photographer.
To participate in the use of any other ophthalmic equipment as necessary in future service developments - following training and competency assessment.
- Ensure cost effective use of all the Trusts materials and resources.
- To implement patient confidentiality and DPA (Data Protection Act 1998) protocols as per the Trusts information governance policies.
To undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post as directed by the Medical Illustration Manager or directorate manager.
