Job summary

We are looking for a Dental Nurse for 15hrs per week who is adaptable, enthusiastic, self-motivated and has an interest in Orthodontics and Maxillo Facial to support our highly motivated multidisciplinary team.

The Orthodontic Department here at the Royal Surrey serves a population of 2 Orthodontic Consultants, 1 Restorative Consultant, 4 Registrars, 1 Associate Specialist and 1 Clinical Assistant. We run clinics from our 5 bay surgery including Multidisciplinary (which include Cleft, Orthognathic and Specialist Paediatric), new patient and treatment.

The Maxillo Facial department undertakes minor procedures and has a strong focus on correction of facial deformity, head and neck malignancy, as well as oral surgery and facial trauma, prosthetic and implant clinics.

The applicant is required to be statutory registered with the General Dental Council (G.D.C). Professional development is strongly supported and encouraged by the trust. Keyboard skills would be an advantage but there is an in house training programme available.

Main duties of the job

As a key participant in the integrated teams within the Orthodontic Unit and Maxillo Facial Unit, the role acts in the ongoing development of both Units as directed by the Senior Dental Nurse Manager and Sisters, ensuring a quality service.

As a Dental Nurse the post holder will be expected to work alongside the Orthodontist chairside whilst taking an active part in the delivery of care and ensuring the safety of the patient at all times and actively participates in an educational role. The Orthodontic Unit provides Cleft /Orthodontic care linking in with the Cleft Palate Centre based at Guys hospital.

The Maxillo Facial department provides a nurse led Wound Care Clinic, undertakes minor procedures and has a strong focus on correction of facial deformity, head & neck malignancy, as well as oral surgery and facial trauma.

The post holder plays a key role within the Minor Operations Room, assisting with Prosthetic and Implant Clinics.

Also be expected and supported to take charge of clinic sessions and will function across the range of clinic activities - both clinical and administrative.

Participate in the giving of health education in relation to oral care to the patients and their carers with relation to pre and post op surgery care.

Participate using all communication skills in dealing with nervous and anxious patients and those with special need requirements where there maybe communication difficulties or challenging behaviour.

To demonstrate care of fixed and removable appliances using a range visual aids. To be able to demonstrate technical skills to less experienced staff.

Deliver appropriate care and treatment to meet individual patients, physical, social and psychological needs.

Ensure and maintain high standards of infection control. To liaise closely with the Trust sterilisation unit.

Become familiar with the technical aspects of the role, learning skills to assist with all the clinics within these specialities.

Ensure that safe measurable standards of practice and high quality care are of paramount importance at all times.

Monitor and report use of consumables in order to keep a well stocked working environment.

Maintain and develop IT knowledge with in house courses for future Trust developments. You will be expected to record accurate data in accordance with the requirements for the service.
