Job summary

We have positions for three Consultant Anaesthetists based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. The jobs are full time posts comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) each. Additional PAs are subject to three months' notice.

These posts have arisen as a result of retirements in the department and expansion of services into Endoscopy with increasing sedation lists to fulfil JAG accreditation criteria to expand and strengthen the Consultant Anaesthetic team.

The successful candidates will have a background in anaesthesia for high-risk surgery, cancer surgery, airway surgery, Obstetric anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia with a strong interest in quality improvement - the department is keen to achieve ACSA (Anaesthetic Clinical Service Accreditation) status.

Main duties of the job

Each post will be a 10 PA contract, which will be split between 8 PAs of direct clinical care and 2 PAs of supporting professional activities. This will be translated into 7PAs in theatres per week with 1.0 PA for a 1:16 general on call rota. Some of these lists per week may be worked as an evening list, which runs until 19.30 or at the weekend. If this is the case, these sessions will be timetabled in the job plan and subject to the usual annual job plan review. A maximum of 1.5 SPAs are allocated to support the requirements of revalidation which include activities such as participating in audit, CPD and mandatory training. Up to a further 1-1.5 PAs may be allocated for other SPA activities. The successful candidate will have a job planning session after 3-6 months of being in post to review their timetable and SPA commitments. The department utilises the CLW Rota system, and this allows annualisation of elements of the job plan. This may be offered to the successful candidate, subject to mutual agreement.

Applicants should hold a CCT or CESR in anaesthesia or be on the GMC Specialist Register in anaesthesia (or be exempt because of current employment).
