Job summary

We are seeking full-time maternity leave cover for 12 months in the Nuclear Medicine Section of the Medical Physics Department, situated in the St Luke's Wing of the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. The post is offered at Band 8a for appointment as a Medical Physics Expert, but applications are actively encouraged from individuals without MPE certification, for appointment at a lower grade depending on experience.

Working in the main department at Guildford and also providing support to the outside centres, you will be involved in all aspects of the clinical service including equipment quality assurance, imaging, in-vitro tests, molecular radiotherapy and support for the PET/CT units. Involvement in research and development projects will be encouraged.

Main duties of the job

You will join our large team of dynamic and friendly Medical Physicists and technologists who provide scientific support to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, five regional Nuclear Medicine Departments and a number of private clients. At the Royal Surrey the Physics team supports three SPECT/CT gamma cameras (including one digital CZT system), as well as running a comprehensive Molecular Radiotherapy service (including I-131 for benign and malignant thyroid disease, Y-90 SIRT, Y-90 synovectomy, Lu-177 DOTATATE, Ra-223 Xofigo and Lu-177 PSMA). We act as MPEs for the privately-run local PET/CT unit, which houses a new "digital" PET/CT system. Through our external contracts, we support a further eight gamma cameras (including two SPECT/CT systems), eight PET/CT scanners, as well as cutting-edge private molecular radiotherapy services. We are active in clinical and academic research, participating in a number of molecular radiotherapy clinical trials. We also have a joint post with the National Physical Laboratory within the team, and close links to the University of Surrey. Training and development is actively supported, including course and conference attendance and STP and HSST training.

You will be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Nuclear Medicine, have a flexible approach to your duties and the ability to work both as part of the team as well as independently in a busy clinical environment.

Job responsibilities

The postholder liaises closely with the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) Licensed Practitioners at each site responsible for delivering the clinical service. A key part of the role is to provide advice and support during the development and implementation of new procedures and techniques. The postholder must strive to ensure that the principles of good radiation safety are practiced and that relevant statutory regulations are complied with. The postholder will liaise closely with the Trusts Radiation Protection Advisor and Radioactive Waste Advisor and will act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) for the Trust and an outside centre. As MPE the postholder will be responsible for the optimisation of nuclear medicine procedures and for recommending good practice in the use and care of nuclear medicine equipment.

The postholder works closely with other staff groups in the multi-disciplinary Nuclear Medicine team and with various other staff throughout the Trust.

Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
Relevant MSc or PhD

Desirable

HCPC registration as a clinical scientist
Certification as a Medical Physics Expert

Highly developed specialist knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in the field of Nuclear Medicine, building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
