Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for the role of Lower Limb Orthopaedic Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. The role commences in April 2023 as a full time, substantive post (10 PAs). The successful applicant is required to have extensive experience in all aspects of lower limb surgery with a focus on Hip and Knee arthroplasty, and general Trauma.

The T&O department is mostly sited at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust with some outreach clinics at Haslemere District Hospital and Cranleigh District Hospital. Operating theatres with laminar flow and a plaster room are dedicated to Orthopaedics and Trauma. Day Surgery is performed in a dedicated NHS facility within the confines of the Guildford Nuffield Hospital.

The Musculoskeletal (MSk) service, together with Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinics are held in a self-contained outpatient unit in close proximity to the Accident & Emergency and Radiology departments.

Main duties of the job

The Royal Surrey has the most active (MATTU) Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in the UK - in which Orthopaedics is taking an increasing role - and courses are run in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons. It is anticipated that this role will continue to expand with the other surgical departments within the hospital.

There are full supporting services in the departments of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The department of Orthopaedics has one Trauma Nurse Coordinator, a Fractured Neck of Femur Nurse Coordinator and an Elective Nurse Coordinator. Pre-assessment clinics for elective inpatients are held in the department.

The department provides a fully comprehensive Orthopaedic and Trauma service. The trauma services are routinely Consultant-based with daily fracture triage, fracture clinics and trauma lists.
