Job summary

  • We are an exemplar site in terms of NHSI networks.
  • We have recently automated tinctoral staining and utilises market leading HE600 H&E staining with tracking systems due to be installed in the coming months.
  • We employ over 20 Pathologists, 21 Biomedical Scientists, 5 Associate Practitioners and 13 support staff.
  • The laboratory supports St Luke's Cancer Centre, a regional centre providing complex cancer surgery and radiotherapy and performs over 400 frozen sections per annum.
  • There is an expansiveImmunohistochemistry service, supported by Roche Diagnostics Ultra platforms, encompassing over 140 antibodies,skin immunofluorescenceand in-situ hybridisation with a projected 70,000 tests per year.
  • We act as a secondary referral centre for Her-2 ISH and performs PDL-1 testing for the region.
  • We were instrumental in the introduction of OSNA into the UK and has recently undergone a £300k upgrade to the latest OSNA equipment and offers the per-operative technique at all 3 Surrey sites and full training will be given in this ground-breaking technique.
  • We support advanced BMS practice

Main duties of the job

What we can offer:

  • We will support in ensuring you can progress by supporting you in completing the IBMS Specialist Diploma and completion of the specialist portfolio.
  • We will train you to undertake dissection to category B and C in a sub-specialised manner, under the guidance of our Advanced Practitioner in Histological Dissection.
  • We have a dedicated Histology Training Officer with extensive and recent experience of IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion.
  • There are opportunities to study for online MSc modules via BioMed Online once trained to the appropriate level and as funding is released.

We have a modern and spacious laboratory and of course, you'll be joining our friendly and supportive team.

The post will be largely based at the RSCH in Guildford, with occasional rotation to one of the other BSPS Surrey Histopathology sites.

  • As part of the Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services between hospitals across the South East, we are the hub for processing approximately 105,000 surgical specimens per annum.

Please note for Band 6 post we will require at least 3 years post-registration histology experiences with in depth knowledge of histology processes.

37.5 hours per week - flexible working options considered Band 5/6 + HCAS (see details below)

Base - Surrey Histology Hub in Guildford (with occasional travel to other sites across Surrey)

To contribute to the delivery and evolution of the Histopathology service to all BSPS sites.

The post holder will be a HPC registered Biomedical Scientist with well-developed specialist knowledge and skills appropriate to their Pathology service. They will be required to work unsupervised (including on shift or on-call systems where appropriate and necessary), either as part of a team or independently, receiving, analysing and reporting specimens for Pathological investigations. The post holder will be required to perform a complex range of tests using dedicated scientific equipment on all samples received, including high-risk specimens, i.e., those from HIV and hepatitis B positive patients. They will be required to interpret and report results in accordance with agreed service protocols to clinicians and nursing staff in primary and secondary care. They will also be required to ensure their appropriate continual professional development and evidence such, in accordance with the requirements of the Health Professions Council (HPC), and train and supervise less experienced staff as directed by their line manager.
