Job summary
One
clinical fellow post is available from August 2023 for an initial six month period
but may be extended by mutual agreement. Applicants should be ST 6-7 or post-CCT Anaesthetists with the FRCA (or
equivalent) and have an interest in regional anaesthesia.
This
post is aimed at a post-fellowship trainee with an established interest in
regional anaesthesia, teaching and research. The Clinical Fellow will be
encouraged to take part in clinical service development and in audit of current
and developing clinical practice in conjunction with existing departmental
audit setup. There will be opportunity for presentation at regional anaesthesia
meetings and to teach on regional anaesthesia courses. Experience will be
gained in acute pain management, including the application of relevant regional
anaesthetic techniques, for example nerve sheath catheter techniques. The
post-holder will be encouraged to take the ESRA Diploma of Regional
Anaesthesia.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital has a large
and innovative orthopaedic department with 12 orthopaedic surgeons including 3
upper limb surgeons. We currently have four ultrasound machines (GE Logiq e,
Sonosite M-Turbo, Sonosite S-Nerve, Sonosite 180Plus) that are regularly used
for ultrasound-guided upper and lower limb blocks.
Main duties of the job
In addition to programmed
time in theatre performing regional anaesthesia the post has a senior level of
on-call clinical commitment which is primarily out of hours (night time and
weekend) work. The role is to oversee and assist 2 trainees in the Intensive
Care Unit, participating in handover rounds and pro-actively managing patients
in the ICU, and to oversee and assist 2 anaesthetic trainees in theatres,
labour ward and anywhere else in the hospital where senior level anaesthetic or
critical care input is required.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital has become the regional oncological
surgical hospital for much of Surrey and Sussex. Many of the highly specialized
oncological surgical specialties are now established here and include
oesophagogastric, hepatobilary, laparoscopic gastrointestinal, major urological,
gynaecological, head and neck and maxillo facial oncology. The development of
these surgical specialties has been associated with exciting opportunities for
anaesthetists to gain extra exposure to the above areas.
