Job summary
The Multi Professional Approved Clinician (MPAC) trainee is a senior consultant-level clinical role providing expert clinical leadership and statutory responsibility across mental health services. The post holder will undertake training and work according to the guidance and supervision of an experienced an Approved Clinician. Where appointed on successful completion of training and approval the postholder will become, Responsible Clinician in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), exercising autonomous professional judgement for a defined group of patients within their scope of practice.
This is a trainee MPAC post that will be based within the Forensic Mental Health Services in the trust. The training post is 2 days a week for 2 years, following which they would progress to a substantive MPAC post once all competencies have been achieved successfully.
During your training you would be based at Kedleston Unit, our Low Secure Unit but would be expected to work in other clinical areas to attain specific competencies.

- Hold clinical responsibility for the assessment, formulation, treatment planning and oversight of a defined caseload with complex and high-risk presentations under supervision.
- Exercise autonomous professional judgement in highly complex clinical situations, including statutory decision-making and risk management.
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary input to care, ensuring care is person-centred, evidence-based, trauma-informed and recovery focused.
- Provide expert clinical advice, consultation and second opinions within scope of practice.
- Ensure physical health considerations are appropriately integrated into care, including medication management and monitoring where relevant.
- Having a good understanding of psychotropic medications and ability to prescribe in patients with complex mental health issues. Support will be available via the pharmacist and the consultant psychiatrist on the ward. (where relevant to the profession)
