Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner
The closing date is 03 July 2025
Job summary
The Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (TACP) is a training role, run through Sheffield Hallam University. The post holder will be a 1st level registered nurse or registered allied health professional. Through academic study at Masters level and demonstrating clinical competency through the Derbyshire portfolio a TACP will be developing an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and competences for expanded scope of advanced clinical practice. The TACP will develop skills in decision-making, diagnosis, formulation, therapeutics, and clinical management for physical health, mental health and health inequalities. The specific characteristics of the TACP role are shaped by the clinical context that the individual practices and their base profession. They will be part of the PICU multi-professional team, and on qualifying, an Advanced Clinical Practitioner will be a senior, autonomous practitioner.
The job requires a commitment to training, including different placement areas for approximately 3.5 years.
Role Context:
The post holder will be based in the Working Age Adult Acute Service Line within Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the job
Whilst in training the TACP will undertake the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice; included in the curriculum are non-medical prescribing (if the trainee's professional registration permits) and work-based learning modules. As well as the academic pathway the TACP will be required to complete a clinical e-portfolio to demonstrate competency against the 4 pillars of advanced practice (clinical, leadership, education and research). There is a requirement for all Derbyshire TACPs to achieve core physical and mental health competencies with further speciality specific added depending on the services area.
As the training progresses it is expected that the TACP will start to spend more clinical time within their service area to allow for the consolidation of skills and the development of autonomous practice. The TACP will gain skills under direct supervision initially to undertake clinical assessment, formulation and treatment of patients with undiagnosed and undifferentiated conditions in both mental and physical health. The TACP will develop advanced skills in clinical decision making, critical thinking, and clinical management skills based upon evidence-based practice.
Through placement areas and support from other ACPs within the organisation the TACP will start to develop confidence working across professional boundaries. Involvement with a quality improvement project will be an essential component during the training.
Band 8a on completion of training.
