Job summary

We are seeking a motivated, committed and enthusiastic individual to provide evidence based harm reduction interventions to drug and alcohol service users within the Derby City community.

Our aim is to provide high quality planned care to individuals experiencing substance misuse problems in order to improve their health and wellbeing and to support their recovery; the role of Health Care Assistant will be integral to achieving this.

Candidates will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and be able to organise and prioritise a busy workload.

Training on relevant systems will be provided. However, good computer skills are required.

Main duties of the job

The Healthcare Assistant post within Derby Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service is a crucial role in reducing the personal and social harm caused by substance misuse (drugs and alcohol) through the provision of a range of interventions.

The post holder will undertake clearly delegated duties to support the work of the service.

The duties will include BBV testing, Phlebotomy, general health support, prescription management including logging and delivery where necessary.

The post will also include the need for accurate note inputting onto System one.

The role will also include clinical interventions such as drug testing, face-to-face client support, harm reduction advice, supporting prescribing clinics, needle exchange, sexual health advice and steroid support/advice.

The post may be located at various locations therefore ability to travel is required.

The post holder will not carry a clinical caseload but will support all aspects of Derby Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service delivery.

The primary role is to support drug and alcohol users to contribute to their own welfare and recovery from substance related harm.

To support the management of prescribing clinics in relation to DHcFT Medical Prescriber/INMP/NMP/Consultant clinics.

Tasks include, drug testing, dry blood spot testing, phlebotomy, ECG recording data inputting and liaison with Derby Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service keyworkers.

To support the service with script management which will include, logging prescriptions and prescription delivery to service users, their designated pharmacy or other location as individually specified.

To assist with the provision of keywork, prescribing and health interventions via 1-to-1, group or clinic support for people referred to the service.

To support the running of a bespoke steroid clinic, providing harm reduction information and health interventions.

To respond to callers in person or on the phone in line with the service philosophy and Trust policies.

To take basic referral information as necessary, and provide information on risk as identified in service guidelines.

To provide simple practical advice to drug/alcohol users, parent/carers or anyone affected by an individuals substance misuse and refer on to appropriate support services as necessary.

To administer drug and/or alcohol testing as required in line with the service policy and procedures.

To attend and participate in regular multi-disciplinary meetings and team meetings.

To maintain confidential records to the recognised DHcFT standard in a timely and satisfactory way, within designated service timescales.

To take part in regular clinical and managerial supervision.

To maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to clients or the service, in line with DHcFT policy and guidance.

To participate in an annual appraisal process in line with Trust policy.

To always work within DHcFT policies and procedures and report any issues relating to compliance to the Service Manager.

To undertake any training/development required to enhance the role or to meet the requirements of the service, identified within the appraisal. To embrace the concept of life-long learning, and actively participate in the appraisal process.

To assist in the planning, organisation and delivery of training events.

To deliver harm reduction information and advice to drug and alcohol users at all stages of their treatment journey. This includes delivering a needle and syringe exchange programme.

To respond in a flexible manner if changes in working hours or locations are required by service demands. Current service demand requires working until 20:00 on a Wednesday or Thursday evening.

To help foster and maintain a culture of hope and optimism.

To undertake other tasks as required that are relative to the post and skill set.
