Job summary

Derbyshire Healthcare invites applications for a part-time Senior Research Assistant post within Learning Disability Services.

The role of the Senior Research Assistant is to support the service to undertake service evaluation, quality improvement and research activity, focused upon clinical outcomes, service effectiveness, service user/carer experience and colleague well-being.

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in research methods and health service improvement.

The main base for the post will be at Kingsway Hospital, Derby, although an alternative work base may be negotiable.

The post holder should have the ability to travel between the base at Kingsway and other clinical sites across Derby and South Derbyshire.

In the short-term the role is likely to be home-based with occasional trips to the office, likely moving to blended home and office working as coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

Main duties of the job

To manage elements of projects from initiation, organisation and delivery of the project lifecycle, enabling and monitoring project progress within and across teams.

This may include study and data collection tool design, data collection and analysis, dissemination and presentation of findings and recommendations to services and other stakeholders for service evaluation, quality improvement and research projects.

Work will be delivered under the guidance and management of the Research Project Manager, and in collaboration with clinical and service leads, informing decision making, supporting and facilitating application into practice with the aim of improving the quality of NHS service delivery and care.

Main Responsibilities

Manage elements of service evaluation, quality improvement and research projects with oversight from line manager, clinical / service leads or research investigators:

Work with the clinical team to identify the research/evaluation question and propose study designs.

Carry out relevant background literature searches and reviews.

Design data collection tools and identify, collect, collate and clean quantitative and/or qualitative data.

This will include electronic patient record data on presentations, assessments, treatments or interventions and follow up contacts. Data collection and reporting requirements are specific and often change. The post holder needs to be alert to the data collection and reporting needs of the service(s) and work with the project manager, service leads and IT department to identify and resolve any issues quickly and safely.

Data collection may also include surveying, interviewing or running focus groups with patients/carers/family members and/or staff.

Analyse data and present findings and recommendations in the most appropriate format for the teams needs.

Prepare data for statistical analyses and undertake basic descriptive and inferential data analysis, generating insights from this data on a routine basis and supporting clinical and operational service leads to action these insights.

Communicate project findings to a range of audiences including those without a technical/research background. This will include writing reports, creating infographics, newsletters, academic posters and oral presentations and supporting in the writing up of projects for publication.

Assist with the preparation of Trust, Health Research Authority and NHS Research Ethics Committee and data sharing agreements, renewals and reports.

Be responsible for the planning, organising and attendance at multidisciplinary meetings at a variety of NHS and non-NHS sites, facilitating meetings where necessary to progress projects.

Liaise and collaborate with other professional and academic groups, internal and external to the Trust, including information management, CCG and NHS England, as required for data recording, collection, interpretation and dissemination.

Enable and support patient and public involvement (PPI) work where appropriate.

Present service evaluation, quality improvement and research findings to multidisciplinary colleagues. Both internal and external.

Represent the Research Department, associated clinical service and Trust at information, training and networking events.

Support the data collection, analysis and report writing for other service evaluation, quality improvement and research studies going on within or in collaboration with the research department, clinical service and Trust.

Where appropriate, upskill clinical and other service colleagues in research, evaluation and quality improvement methods to facilitate critical thinking, evidence based practice and continually investigate areas for improvement and development.

To assist new service developments, consult the literature and existing evidence base to recommend best methods of implementation and to identify possible barriers to application. Contribute to development discussions and where possible embed evaluation at the heart of any new development.

Be a point of contact for others including clinicians seeking input and advice on research, evaluation and quality improvement projects. Provide practical assistance where capacity allows and where projects align with the strategic priorities of the service. Link with wider R&D team and other internal and external initiatives / support services for joined up working.
