Job summary

This role will be known as the turnaround HCA locally as it involves supporting patients, nurses, endoscopists and other members of the MDT to achieve optimisation of room capacity and room turnaround while maintaining optimal quality and safety for patient and service. You will take instruction from Band 6 coordinators and work predominantly alongside the Band 5 admission and procedural room staff, the Band 2 scope coordinator and the Band 2 porters.

You will join a team of health professionals who, with the highest standards of safety, in the best and varied interests of the patient, will support a smooth timely pathway through endoscopy. Your role will support patients being seen at the right time in the right room by the right clinician.

The Endoscopy unit is a busy JAG accredited Unit undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Through investment we now have 6 working endoscopy rooms that deliver to our patients; we also have use of Theatres and Farage Unit as procedural areas when radiological and GA support is required. We will soon expand our in-session TNE capacity to a dedicated TNE service.

Main duties of the job

We are a very friendly, very supportive and very busy therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy unit. We have 6 endoscopy rooms and in addition to this we have theatre lists, emergency Inpatient and GI bleed lists, TNE, ERCP, Bronchoscopy, EBUS, EUS.

Your role will help the team coordinate the flow of patients through admission and procedure. You will be given a period of training with supernumerary status for this, but we will expect that you will be a trained HCA already able to perform some, if not all the following: Take and record patient observations and escalate as necessary, cannulate, perform venepuncture, ECG and point of care testing.

Job responsibilities

Assist the endoscopist and registered nurse in the admission of patients through the endoscopy unit and in the endoscopy rooms.

Help prepare the Endoscopy procedural rooms for the lists ensuring adequate and appropriate equipment is available prior to and after lists.

Set up Olympus endoscope to Olympus stack ready for procedure ensuring it is functioning correctly.

Troubleshoot simple Olympus stack and endoscope issues as necessary.

Troubleshoot simple endoscope, stack and IT system faults to enable rooms to continue.

Be responsible for the bedside cleaning of endoscopes and complete all documentation in relation to this accurately.

Check all samples obtained with the registered nurse and ensure all documentation is completed accurately.

Support the safe transit of patients to recovery.

Support in the stocking and cleaning of endoscopy rooms.

Undertake patients vital signs observations and ensure these are documented accurately, escalate any unusual observations to the registered nurse.

Undertake cannulation following appropriate training.

Undertake venepuncture following appropriate training.

Communicate effectively with patients and relatives of all backgrounds and abilities understanding how patient characteristics and procedural nervousness can effect behaviours that will need supporting and understanding.

Report, disseminate and follow up the failure of equipment essential to the safe running of the unit and the maintenance of the standards associated with our COAST and JAG accreditations.
