Job summary

This full-time job combines gaining 'on the job' experience whilst undertaking the Podiatry Degree Apprenticeship Programme with the University of Salford. The honours degree programme extends over 3 academic years and involves face to face academic learning whilst working as a Podiatry Support Worker. Following completion of the apprenticeship, candidates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and become a qualified Podiatrist.

The Therapies Directorate has a robust support network and a strong focus on continuous professional development, supervision of staff and individualised job plans. The starting salary of our Physiotherapy Degree Apprentices will be at a Band 3. On completion of 2 years of the programme apprentices will be eligible for a Band 4 salary once all competencies are complete.

Main duties of the job

This post includes all duties associated with the running and delivery of the clinical team in which the post is based, including acute ward-based work, out-patient clinics or the domiciliary setting

The post holder will be provided with a robust induction and ongoing support and training throughout the role both via the podiatry service as well as the wider multidisciplinary team. Candidates should be able to demonstrate professionalism, enthusiasm for patient care and evidence of previous acute healthcare experience.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as well as experience of working within a team.

To assist the Podiatrist in the treatment of clients as required

To hold responsibility for own caseload, as delegated by an HCPC registered therapist, working without immediate supervision. This may include sessions with individual patients or group classes.

To provide rehabilitation as part of a patient-centred treatment plan, agreed and documented by the Podiatrist.

To assist the Podiatrists with challenging clients or those with complex needs who require more than one person to treat.

Instruct clients and carers, providing direction and guidance on a range of Podiatry interventions independently where directed by a Podiatrist.

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with clients, relatives, and carers. This will include clients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating

Gain informed consent from the patient prior to undertaking any intervention and seek guidance from an HCPC registered therapist if there are any concerns about the patients capacity to do so.

Use skills of tact, diplomacy, and gentle persuasion to enhance patients compliance in treatment programmes.

To deal sensitively with patients, both in person and over the telephone, taking their personal circumstances into consideration and demonstrating appropriate empathy.

Continually monitor and re-assess allocated patients and report any concerns to the therapist or other appropriate health care professional.

To monitor the progress of allocated patients against identified goals, reporting back to the therapist according to agreed caseload review arrangements

Be responsible for the discharge of patients upon completion of the therapy episode of care, following discussion with an HCPC registered therapist.

To access relevant IT systems to establish or confirm client information and become proficient in the use of patient electronic record system; EMIS

To submit accurate records of sickness, lieu time, study and annual leave.

To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in reviewing and updating as required.

Represent your patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings, including discussion of patient care, progress and discharge planning.

To carry out activities with moderate physical effort daily.

The job may involve the manual handling of wheelchairs, beds, hoists and furniture and the movement of equipment from one place to another, sometimes in a confined environment and working in shared treatment areas.

To keep accurate records of work undertaken in client notes

To document client contacts in line with Trust and Podiatry standards.
