Job summary

We are looking for a suitably qualified, specialist Biomedical Scientist with a keen interest and experience of data analysis and IT. The post holder will work in the context of the Objectives of the Pathology Directorate and the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. They will be responsible for and take technical charge of IT & Digital projects within the Cellular Pathology Department.

The post holder will also oversee the operations and staff, and provide leadership, expertise and troubleshooting in the main Histopathology laboratory and will be the lead BMS for IT & Digital workstreams in Cellular Pathology, including but not limited to LIMS & Digital Pathology implementation.

About us

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Pathology is a clinical support service. Medical and scientific staff within Pathology provide diagnostic and clinical advice to surgeons and clinicians within the Trust and to General Practitioners within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre area. The department has UKAS accreditation and is also accredited to train Biomedical Scientists and Junior Doctors.

The department has a strong user focus and a proven track record in developing new services to meet the changing demands of our clinicians and patients. This focus, allied to the regional specialist services, gives real opportunities for staff to train and develop in a supportive and educationally challenging environment.

Responsibilities specific to this IT Lead role:

To be knowledgeable and experienced with departmental IT systems, particularly Digital Pathology and LIMS systems, alongside Dragon and digital dictation software.

Maintain an up-to date knowledge of IT developments pertaining to the Cellular Pathology department.

To take a lead in providing Digital IT solutions within department

To interrogate IT systems to provide data in support of quality, audit, management, research and financial requirements

To analyse and present data in a clear, concise, user-friendly format

Implement use of IT systems to ensure a full audit trail for digital image tracking and recording allied departmental activities

Provide training and advice in the use of departmental digital IT related hardware and software

Represent the Cellular Pathology department at Pathology IT meetings

To take a key role in the development and implementation of Vantage workflow management system and to ensure appropriate interfacing with Pathology LIMS and IMS.

To liaise with Pathology & Trust IT teams, LIMS and Digital Pathology providers where appropriate.

Provide training, support and advice for digital imaging including macroscopic and microscopic specimen photography and image and to advise on issues of IT compatibility

  • HCPC State Registration (Health Professions Council)
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology
  • MSc Biomedical Science (or related subject) or equivalent to enable eligibility for Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science e.g. Higher Specialist Diploma
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Membership or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences

  • Higher level IT related qualification.
