Job summary

The joint Acute and Community SLT Team are a supportive, friendly and social group of therapists, SLT apprentice, assistants and admin staff serving the Fylde Coast population. We strive for continued improvement and innovation to provide a high-quality responsive service. Over recent years we have implemented the use of FEES alongside our long-established videofluoroscopy service. We are also in the process of moving forward in being able to offer suitable patients pharyngeal electrical stimulation within the inpatient setting. We are supportive of and committed to continuing professional development and the training of SLT students.

Due to internal staff changes, the Adult SLT team have a permanent Band 6 role within our inpatient team. We would welcome applications from newly qualified SLTs or experienced SLTs and would consider offering this post as a Band 6 or a Band 5/6 development post to the right candidate. Part time hours and flexible working will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible for the communication and/or swallowing management (assessment, diagnosis, treatment, general management and discharge) of a caseload of adults with diverse and complex presentations, working without direct supervision.
  • Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner
  • Work as part of the general ward multidisciplinary teams and the wider adult SLT team.
  • Assist in the clinical supervision and education of SLT assistants, SLT apprentice and SLT students.
  • Work within and adhere to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Practice, relevant Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Honours Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered member of HCPC & RCSLT
  • A demonstrable commitment to CPD activity with evidence of same

Desirable

  • Evidence of successful completion of relevant specialist post graduate courses in dysphagia.
  • Evidence of successful post graduate training in videofluoroscopy/FEES.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Knowledge of current best practice and experience in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide range of swallowing and communication difficulties relevant to this caseload.
  • Knowledge of RCSLT Professional and Clinical Guidelines/Policies both locally and nationally relevant to this post.
  • Experience of delivering training to other professionals.
  • Sound knowledge of principles surrounding consent, Mental Capacity Act (2005) & safeguarding
  • Knowledge of the principles surrounding audits, clinical research and quality issues

Desirable

  • Experience of MDT working in specific clinical area.
  • Experience of working with speech and language therapy assistants.
  • Experience in the clinical education of speech and language therapy students.
