Job summary

The Pathology Directorate is seeking a responsible and enthusiastic individual to work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to broaden your experience and learn new skills in this interesting and challenging role.

Working as part of our friendly and hardworking team, the successful candidate will assist in ensuring a efficient, timely and high quality output from the laboratory, to the benefit of our patients and service users.

This is a part time post, with working days of Monday, Tuesday and half day on a Wednesday. Core hours are 09:00 - 17:15, but there will also be the requirement to work some early 08:00 - 16:15, late 11:45 - 20:00 and weekends 09:00 - 17:15 on a (approx.) 1 in 5 rotational basis

There may also be the prospect of occasional additional hours to cover leave and sickness as per the requirements of the service

The successful applicant will start on NHS AfC Band 2, with progression to NHS AfC Band 3 possible upon successful completion of the IBMS Certificate of Achievement

Main duties of the job

  • Load samples onto laboratory auto-analysers
  • Perform analyser maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Comply with mandatory training and personal competency assessment
  • Efficiently manage the workload, ensuring priority for urgent samples
  • Comply with all Health and Safety and confidentiality requirements
  • Check samples prior to analysis, to identify mislabelled, underfilled or incorrect sample types
  • Carry out basic analysis, and prepare samples for more complex analysis, under the supervision of BMS staff
  • Be responsible for the safe receipt and storage of reagents and controls
  • Monitor fridge/freezer temperatures
  • Perform general housekeeping duties, including cleaning
  • Work in any section of the Haematology, Transfusion or immunology labs, as required
  • Work equally effectively as part of a team and as a sole MLA, under supervision of a BMS outside of core hours
  • Assist in specimen reception as required
  • Accurately input patient data to the Laboratory IT system
  • Assist with the preparation and transport of samples to external sites
  • Participate in departmental audits
  • Respond to telephone enquires where no interpretation of results is required
  • Ensure the correct disposal of clinical waste and sharps
