Job summary
This is a substantive post for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with an interest in working in just ICM or alongside an allied specialty. Sixteen Critical Care beds are currently provided. This is made up of 10 Level 3 beds and six Level 2 beds. There are currently ten Critical Care Consultants. The department is well supported with trainee doctors, clinical fellows and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs). The senior resident tier is made up of ICM trainees and anaesthesia trainees; the junior tier is made up of a mixture of clinical fellows, ACCPs and internal medicine trainees.
There are excellent opportunities for teaching. The unit is approved for training by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Internal medicine trainees rotate to the unit for three month modules. Foundation year 1 and 2 doctors also work on the unit. We have 5 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners; we intend to recruit and train a further 2 over the next few years.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties & Programmed Activities
Except in emergencies or where otherwise agreed with your clinical manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the programmed activities set out in your new Job Plan, as reviewed annually and in- line with the provisions below.
Associated Duties
You are responsible for the associated duties set out in schedule 2 of the Terms and Conditions. These include, amongst other things, a requirement to: - Collaborate with colleagues in primary and secondary care to implement protocols for the management of patients.
Keep up to date with the developments in the specialty. It is expected that active consideration will be given to existing technologies in terms of cost effectiveness. In addition, the use of the new techniques where they can be justified clinically will be encouraged. Conforming to "state of the art" advances will ultimately depend on other priorities within the total unit.
Contribute to the Postgraduate and continuing medical education. The Trust supports the requirement of CME/CPD as intended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
About us
There is an established nurse-led outreach service and a critical care Rehabilitation Coordinator who works alongside a multidisciplinary team comprising physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, and speech/language therapy. We hold monthly ICU follow up clinics in addition to a nurse-led follow up service. There are weekly MDT meetings, and regular morbidity and mortality meetings which colleagues are job planned to attend.
The unit has years of research experience and has dedicated research nurse support. We have participated in numerous NIHR portfolio trials. The Trust is keen to support Academic appointments and can support links to both Lancaster University and Manchester University.

The contract will be a 10 PA contract, but extra DCC sessions are negotiable. The direct clinical care sessions will be delivered on an annualised sessional contract. Consultants work in 2-5 day blocks of time, covering 24/7. There are two Consultants rostered Mon to Fri days 0800-1800. There is one Consultant rostered from 1800-0800 and one Consultant on weekend days. There is a minimum of one airway trained trainee and one junior tier JCF or ACCP on every shift, working a full shift 1:8 rota.
Jobs plans will be formally reviewed within the first 6 months after appointment and agreed according to evidence from actual activity. All consultants will be allocated 1.5 core SPA per week for professional development (CPD). Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit. Core SPA time will generally be undertaken within the Trust. Any variation from this principle must be discussed, agreed and made clear within the Consultant Job Plan.
Additional SPA time will be made available to Consultants on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and subsequently reviewed by the Consultant and their Head of Department during the Job Plan review session. Additional (non-core) SPA time will be undertaken within the Trust or at other agreed NHS sites or academic institutions during the normal working day.
