We have an exciting opportunity with the Ophthalmology Team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a Locum Consultant in General Ophthalmology to commence in post as soon as possible.
We are looking to appoint a consultant with an interest in General Ophthalmology and sub-speciality interests, who will be keen to strengthen and expand the department to meet the increasing demand in eye care around the Fylde Coast.
This post is required to undertake a variety of general/primary care, glaucoma and other relevant sub-speciality clinics and theatre list independently. The post is for a period of one year with view to extension.This post has been designed to develop further leadership within the Ophthalmology Team as well as increasing experience and is needed to support the general/primary care, glaucoma and relevant sub-specialities (medical retina, vitreoretina, paediatric ophthalmology etc).
Applicants must be on FRCOphth or equivalent and experience or fellowship in the sub-speciality is expected.The eye outpatient department (OPD) comprises 7 fully equipped consulting rooms, imaging room, treatment room (with facilities for minor operations), an orthoptic department and visual field rooms.
Main duties of the job
As well as general ophthalmology clinics, there are dedicated sub-specialty clinics in oculoplastics, vitreoretina, paediatric ophthalmology/ ocular motility, cornea and medical retina including PDT and anti VEGF injections.
We provide a one stop cataract clinic, nurse led botulinum toxin clinics - a nurse injector supported medical retina service.
The medical retina unit comprises 4 consultation rooms and a treatment room. The macular (AMD and DMO) service is based in this dedicated unit.
There is access to fluorescein angiography, OCT/OCT-A, AS-OCT, corneal topography, and ocular ultrasound.
The theatres are based within our own dedicated Ophthalmic Surgical Unit. The twin theatres have floor mounted Zeiss microscopes and Alcon operating systems. The unit has a day case area for local and general anaesthetic patients and consulting rooms.
The job will include a mix of mainly general ophthalmology clinics with the below activities.
2 General Clinics, 2 OPD clinics (Glaucoma and primary care/eye casualty, 1 Laser clinic, 2 Sub-speciality clinics (OPC and MRU), 1 Theatre (independent list), 1 Admin, 1 CPD/ Audit
In addition, the post holder will take part on the second on call rota which is non-resident oncall.
