Job summary

The Ophthalmic Surgical Unit is a specialised department which integrates The Medical Retina Unit, macular service, two theatres, a recovery area and an ophthalmic day surgery ward offering a number of clinical settings within the unit. The department is considered one of Blackpool Victoria Hospitals greatest assets treating up to 11,000 patients annually.

We are a forward thinking service, we are keen to up skill our staff and retain and develop our workforce. As a department we are moving towards virtual pathways, introducing patient initiated follow ups, and we are working towards nurse led clinics. We have also developed Medisight within our unit which is working well.

We are a great enthusiastic team, and we work together to achieve the best patient care possible.

The post will consist of a mixture of outpatient work, supporting with casualty clinics and working on MRU. Please note this post will also include a 1 in 8 on call duties covering evening, weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

Job Plan

The post holder will be expected to undertake the following 10 session job plan

  • 5 General / primary care clinics
  • 3 sessions to include either an independent theatre list, laser, possible macular / anti VEGF injection clinics, or other subspecialty clinics depending on experience
  • Admin

Outpatients

Outpatient Ophthalmic clinics are held at BVH.

The outpatient department comprises:

  • 7 fully equipped consulting rooms,
  • Orthoptic department
  • Treatment room (with facilities for minor operations)
  • Visual fields rooms
  • Diagnostics Room with Heidelberg OCT Scan, OPTOS Fundal Camera, Slit Lamp fitted with digital screen and Anterior segment camera, Topographic Scan

As well as general ophthalmology clinics, there are dedicated speciality clinics in oculoplastics, vitreoretina, paediatric ophthalmology / ocular motility, cornea, and medical retina.

We provide a one stop cataract clinic and there is nurse led botulinum toxin clinics and nurse injectors supporting the medical retina service

Theatres

Surgery is based within our own dedicated Ophthalmic Surgical Unit. The twin theatres have, floor mounted Zeiss microscopes and B & L Stellaris phaco systems. The unit has a preoperative area for local and day case general anaesthetic patients and consulting rooms for dedicated cataract and specialist clinics.

  • To participate in consultant led ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
  • To participate in the review process of referrals from other specialities regarding clinical management, rehabilitation and discharge planning.
  • The on call would be part of the first on call rota, 1:8 nonresident, with the OSTs and other Speciality doctors
  • The successful applicant will undertake such reasonable alternative patterns of duty as may from time to time be required of him/her to conform with exigencies of the service.
  • The successful applicant will undertake such exceptional irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • The post holders duties will be allocated by the Consultant Medical Staff within the Team.
  • The postholder will be required to maintain their knowledge and skills. Study leave provision will be available to the post holder.
  • To participate in Training of Junior Medical Staff and Medical Students.

  • Primary medical qualification - full GMC registered

Desirable

  • Possession of a post graduate qualification (FRCOphth, MRCOphth, FRCS)
  • Exposure to UK ophthalmology training
  • Able to undertake phacoemulsification procedures, Intravitreal injections.

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of at least 4 years in Ophthalmology
  • Able to undertake independent laser
  • Evidence of participation in Audit.

Desirable
