Job summary

The Pathology Directorate is seeking an enthusiastic individual with an interest in healthcare science to work as an apprentice phlebotomist, whilst undertaking a Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant qualification.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work as a phlebotomist whilst gaining a healthcare qualification in carrying out routine technical and scientific procedures and support within the hospital, for a wide range of people.

No previous experience is required, as full training will be provided by our friendly, hard-working team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

You will be required to perform venepuncture and/or capillary sampling for safe collection of blood in the hospital wards and clinics as required. You will also be allocated 20% of your working week (1 day) as a study day in order to carry out work required for the level 2 Healthcare Science Associate qualification.

Applicants must be willing and able to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service. Currently, morning ward rounds are completed 07:30-11:30 with some clinics taking place in both mornings and afternoons. There will also be an expectation to work one weekend day per week. An additional requirement of the role is to assist in the pathology front reception, where patients arrive for blood tests.

Main duties of the job

Our Phlebotomists take part in a rota to take blood from patients in the Pathology Outpatient area and on the wards of Blackpool Victoria Hospital

Particular qualities we are looking for include:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with a polite and courteous manner towards patients and relatives.
  • A passion for delivering excellent results and an eye for detail
  • Good hand to eye coordination
  • Ability to work under pressure, as part of a team as well as organising your own workload.
  • Adhere strictly to established protocols and Trust policies
  • Have excellent work attendance and good time-keeping
  • Provide a caring and professional service for users
  • Maintain high standards of professional appearance
  • Enthusiasm, determination and a positive, can do attitude
  • Willing and able to work flexibility
  • Willingness to work at short notice

You will need basic computer skills and be able to meet the physical demands of the job which include standing, bending, walking and pushing Phlebotomy trolleys for the duration of the shift.

For the level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant, you will be required to demonstrate basic literacy and numeracy skills. GCSEs in science, maths and English are desirable, but not essential as you may complete these alongside the apprenticeship. Please note, if you have already completed this or a similar apprentice-based qualification, you will not be eligible for this role.
