Job summary

The Trust is looking to recruit an experienced community dentist to lead the North Lancashire Community Dental Team.

The post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership to the Community Dental Service. The post holder will also provide dental care to priority groups either at any fixed site or on domiciliary visits or on outreach.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the clinical leadership of the dental team and will be a key member of the dental management team.

  1. To ensure the clinical governance arrangements are robust and effective in dental services.
  2. To work closely with other health, educational and social service professionals in providing care for special needs groups.
  3. To provide dental staff with supervision in line with their professional and day to day operational needs.
  4. To ensure annual appraisals for clinical staff are completed, by adopting a cascade system. To identify and support the training needs of staff identified in these appraisals.
  5. Participate, through appraisal, in matching organisational aims with personal objectives and supporting staff within own area of responsibility to do the same.
  6. To participate in regular reviews of the skill mix of the service in light of identified service needs and developments.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide dental treatment to identified patient groups such as phobic children and special needs patients by all means available including the use of General Anaesthesia (in a hospital setting), relative analgesia sedation and/or IV sedation where appropriate. This will mean working in differing environments such as community clinic, hospitals, outreach centres or domiciliary visits.
  2. To provide an appropriate response to referrals within agreed time frame e.g. urgent or non-urgent depending on the nature of the clients needs
  3. To ensure that personal and service targets are achieved.
  4. To work with the Head of Dental Services to put in place effective workload management systems to ensure there is an equitable distribution of work appropriate to the staff members grade and experience.
  5. To liaise with hospitals, general dental and medical practitioners in connection with the dental care of patients.

To work with the Head of Dental Services to develop innovative practice dealing creatively with service demands, which will include response times to referrals, allocation systems and monitoring systems for management of caseload

  • Dental Qualification i.e. BDS/LDS etc and up to date.
  • Valid GDC registration.
  • Relevant Higher Registerable Qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Current membership of a recognized protection society.
  • Postgraduate Qualification in Special Care Dentistry or Equivalent Experience.
  • On NHS Performers List or eligible to be.

  • Completed VDP training or equivalent (unless exempt)
