Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Emergency Department Staff Nurse

The closing date is 05 May 2026

Job summary

Now is an exciting time to join Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as we continue our journey to becoming one of the most forward-thinking Trusts in Europe, following our move to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

We are seeking enthusiastic, compassionate, and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurses to join our dynamic Emergency Department. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your emergency nursing skills within a fast-paced, supportive environment at a state-of-the-art facility.

As a Staff Nurse, you will deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centred care to people presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergency conditions. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care in line with Trust policies and clinical standards.

You will be supported to develop your clinical skills and confidence through education, training, and supervision. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to compassionate care.

Working closely with senior nurses, medical staff, and wider Emergency and Acute Medicine teams, you will play a key role in maintaining patient safety, flow, and quality of care.

If you are committed to learning, teamwork, and delivering high standards of emergency nursing care, we would be delighted to welcome you to our team.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department, you will deliver high-quality, safe, and effective patient care in a fast-paced environment. You will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care for patients presenting with a range of urgent and emergency conditions, in line with Trust policies and NMC standards.

You will provide compassionate, patient-centred care, communicating effectively with patients and families, offering health education and emotional support. You will recognise and respond promptly to clinical deterioration, escalating concerns and ensuring timely interventions.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, you will support the smooth running of the department by prioritising care, maintaining patient flow, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation.

You will demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and respect at all times, acting as a positive role model. You will support students and newly appointed staff through supervision and mentorship appropriate to your experience.

You will engage in ongoing learning and development, participating in mandatory training, reflective practice, and continuing professional development. You will contribute to clinical governance through audit participation, incident reporting, and quality improvement activities.

You will follow infection prevention and control procedures, safeguarding responsibilities, and Trust policies to ensure patient safety at all times.
