Main duties of the job
Working as a Health Care Assistant in the Emergency Department is fast-paced, varied, and rewarding. Typical duties include:
Patient Care & Support
Assisting patients with personal care needs (washing, toileting, feeding, repositioning).
Providing comfort, reassurance, and emotional support to patients and their families.
Clinical Support
Recording and monitoring patient observations (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation).
Taking and recording ECGs.
Assisting with wound care, plastering, dressings, and other minor procedures under supervision.
Supporting the resuscitation team during emergencies.
Emergency & Acute Care Assistance
Safely transferring and escorting patients within the department (e.g., to X-ray, CT, or wards).
Assisting with patient triage and flow through the department.
Supporting patients with mobility, using aids or equipment as required.
Administrative & Communication Duties
Updating patient records accurately and promptly.
Communicating effectively with patients, relatives, and the wider ED team.
Environmental & Safety Duties
Maintaining cleanliness and ensuring equipment is stocked and ready for use.
Following infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
Ensuring patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality are upheld.
