Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust provides an environment where Orthoptists can develop their knowledge and skills with peer group support.

The post holder will work within a large team of Orthoptists who form part of an Ophthalmic multi-disciplinary team based at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC). They will work across a number of sites including Sandwell Health Campus and community clinics to deliver orthoptic services to paediatric and adult patients. The post holder will be involved in vision screening and Community Orthoptics Outreach services.

Orthoptists are encouraged to participate in clinical audit and research to develop themselves as members of the clinical team and to share best practice within the service and other Orthoptists via the British and Irish Orthoptic Society and via publication of research.

Main duties of the job

As the Specialist Orthoptist you will be actively involved in the investigation, diagnosis and management of a wide range of ophthalmic conditions presenting to the orthoptic service. This will include patients referred from the Emergency department at BMEC.

The post holder will be required to use evidence based practice to formulate management plans and postulate prognosis. Clinical administrative duties will form part of the job role, working with other clinical colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care.

You will be expected to demonstrate continuing professional development in line with the requirements of the Health and Care professions Council.
