Job summary

The introduction of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) is an exciting time for the NHS. With a new approach to reviewing and learning from patient safety events, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trusts (SWB) are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with a passion for improving the safety and experience of Our Patients, People and Population.

As a Patient Safety Co-Ordinator within the Corporate Patient Safety Team, you will work closely with the Clinical Groups governance teams to promote a culture of openness and learning from good practice and areas that may need some improvement. You will support the Clinical teams to understand the number, types and trends within the incident data submitted via our Safeguard (Ulysses) incident reporting system.

You will support the teams with their day to day monitoring of their incidents, including the tracking of Duty of Candour requirements, lessons learned and recommended action completion.

You will support the Patient Safety Investigators by providing information as required for their investigations and helping to co-ordinate learning events such as meeting and reviews. You will also support the dissemination of learning and information across the Trust.

We want someone to embody our Trust values of Ambition, Respect and Compassion whilst delivering our Strategy: Our Patients, Our People, Our Population.

Main duties of the job

You will be working closely with clinical groups, across a wide range of specialties and clinical grades. You will need to be able to adapt your communication style to engage in discussion with team members, showing empathy and compassion during difficult conversations when things may have gone wrong. You will equally need to demonstrate these qualities when engaging with patients and families should they contact the team for an update.

In addition to excellent verbal communication, you will also need to demonstrate effective written/digital skills to provide appropriate assurance and updates regarding your areas of responsibility on a regular basis.

Recognition of trends within data will be required to support the Clinical Groups and Patient Safety Investigators to identify any emerging concerns.

There is also opportunity to support the creation and delivery of learning materials in various formats to your local areas, engage in research for patient benefit and support the development of policies.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live
