The Speech and Language Therapy Service in Sandwell Community is excited to recruit a speech and language therapist into our growing integrated community service.

Our community Speech and Language Therapy team, based in iCares works across Sandwell. We are a welcoming and aspirational group of therapists with a clear vision and strong commitment to improving the lives of local people. We also place equal emphasis upon caring for each other and are proud to work within a trust that champions the health and well-being of its staff.

The Sandwell & West Birmingham Speech & Language therapy service is committed to developing clinical specialist career pathways and opportunities for developing SLTs. Our team has close links with the acute Speech and language therapy team and contributes in supporting acute and community band 5 SLT rotations and supports development across the SLT service.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual who is able to work independently with a broad range of communication and swallowing presentations across community settings. You will have the opportunity to work with patients in outpatient settings, in care homes and in their own homes and travelling across the Sandwell area.

This role involves working directly with adults with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. It will involve carrying out assessments and therapy programmes. We also support an out of hours admission avoidance service and take turns to contribute to weekend working.

We are looking for an individual who is motivated with their development, enthusiastic and flexible in their approach to work. You will need to have excellent communication skills, be able to work as part of a team and be able to motivate patients. You will be able to use highly developed interpersonal skills to quickly establish and foster strong relationships with a range of key individuals and MDTs.

You will be working alongside experienced Speech and Language Therapists, Speech and language therapy assistants, rehab support workers and the wider multidisciplinary team. You will also be required to participate in supervision and mentoring for other team members and students as part of the role.

Our Speech and Language Therapy service has access to an established videofluoroscopy service so successful candidates will be able to expand their clinical skills portfolio in these areas of assessment.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live
