Job summary

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative, and progressive Consultant to join our General and Colorectal Surgery team. The appointee will cover both sites, City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital during the on call. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) and with experience at working at consultant level in General and Colorectal surgery

In addition, applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in Emergency General surgery and can manage an unselected general surgery emergency take at consultant level.

This Job is fixed term for 12 months starting ASAP

Main duties of the job

The focus of this job will be high volume, low complexity elective general and colorectal surgery. There will be no commitment towards cancer surgery. The successful applicant will take part in an unselected general surgical emergency on call with a frequency of 1 in 7.

  1. To collaborate and work to maintain General and Colorectal services in line with strategic requirements.
  1. To provide, with the other Consultants in the specialty, routine and emergency general surgery services to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for annual, study and professional leave.
  1. To provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust.
  1. To develop a special interest to complement those of the existing Consultants in the Colorectal service accordance with the priorities of the Trust.
  1. To develop appropriate services and techniques required to fulfil clinical needs, within available resources.
  1. To take responsibility for the professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff, in conjunction with colleagues.
  1. To participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics and general practitioners.
  1. To participate in the training and assessment of specialist registrars rotating through the department.
  2. To liase with medical staff in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust.
