Job summary
We are delighted to advertise 4 Substantive Consultant posts in Critical Care and Anaesthesia at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. Consultant will be responsible for delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to the service users in accordance with the trusts values, procedures, and operating policies. As we embrace new ways of working from the lesson learnt after the pandemic, this is an exciting time to join our team as we further develop and expand our services and find innovative ways of working. Post holders will have a 50:50 split between critical care and anaesthesia. Anaesthesia sessions are negotiable to suit the applicant's sub-specialty interests. Individuals wishing to work in critical care without any anaesthetic sessions are welcome to apply.
We are committed to being a great place to work, a great place to train and great place to receive care. We encourage ideas for service development in both anaesthetics and critical care. There is ample opportunity to develop personal interest in amongst other things like management, governance, service development and education, training, and research.
Closing date: 2nd April2023
Interview date: 21st April 2023
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join the current department of 49 existing highly motivated and respected consultants, including 15 who currently provide critical care cover, supported by a team of 21 experienced SAS doctors and trainees from both Birmingham and Stoke School of Anaesthesia. All consultants at the Trust work cross-site at both City and Sandwell Hospitals, with theatre and critical care services at both hospitals. The appointee will be expected to work flexibly, depending on the needs of the service, with on-calls in critical care. We currently provide an on-call cover for each site on a 1 in 9 frequency. Initially posts are for 10PAs with additional sessions available if mutually agreeable. From the non-clinical perspective, strengths in the fields of either medical education and simulation training or service development and risk management would complement the department well. The department is looking for enthusiastic candidates who will bring new skills, knowledge, and techniques to the department. The department prides itself in flexible job planning. Our aim is to provide high quality patient experience but in a very staff friendly environment.
About us
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.
We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:
- Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive, and engaged staff.
- Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
3.Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives
