Job summary

Do you have a passion for working with people?

Are you interested in a role in health or social care?

Have you completed your A Levels / BTECs / T Levels or a health and social care qualification?

Not sure that full time studying is right for you?

Come and join us at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust to complete our exciting new Occupational Therapy degree-level apprenticeship - meaning you can work as you study!

Degree level apprenticeships are becoming a popular way to study Occupational Therapy in England. The first apprenticeships were launched in 2019 and numbers are growing steadily. Following successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy and the Apprenticeship Certificate. You will then be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as an Occupational Therapist.

The Occupational Therapy apprenticeship training program is delivered in conjunction with Wolverhampton University and is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

Main duties of the job

Within this 3-year programme, you will spend 1,000 hours on clinical placement. You will be taught one day per week at the university, except during the full-time placements (one on average per year, each lasting 6-8 weeks). During academic modules there is also an expectation of independent study and work place learning.

You will have a mentor assigned to you from within the Trust Occupational Therapy team who will support your learning.

The successful candidates will be initially appointed as Band 3 Therapy Assistants.

Upon successful completion of the first 2 years, the successful candidate will progress to a Band 4 Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner which includes enhanced pay and responsibilities.

On successful completion of the programme, you will be able to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and are invited to apply for a position as a Band 5 Occupational Therapist within the Trust.

About us

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens in 2024 and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond). If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three newly emerging strategic objectives:

  1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live
