Job summary

The Imaging Department at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is experiencing an exciting period of transformation. With over £1 million investment in Imaging Services we are leading the way in response times for patient x-rays and scan meaning access to faster treatment for patients.

As a member of the team there will be the opportunity to excel in a wide range of disciplines including General Radiography, Accident and Emergency work, Theatre work, Mobiles and Fluoroscope. As well as other specialist areas such as CT, MRI, Intervention Radiography and Cardiology.

We provide Imaging services across a 7 day service at City Hospital in Birmingham, Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich and Rowley Regis Community Hospital in Rowley Regis and Winston Green Prison. You will be expected to participate in our busy Out of Hours and seven-day service.

Main duties of the job

Sandwell General Hospital and City Hospital are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency services, including Emergency Department, Stroke, Cardiac, Maternity and Breast Screening Services. Rowley Regis Community Hospital provides rehabilitation and a wide range of outpatient and diagnostic services. We also have imaging services that operate from Neptune Health Park, where we support the ever growing demand on the GP surgery.

Aside from being one of the largest providers of acute patient services in the Midlands, the Trust also has a substantial teaching and research agenda with several academic departments including haematology, ophthalmology, cardiology and gynaecological oncology.

A multi-million pound investment has recently taken place within our General Imaging departments, which has seen us move from cassette-based CR systems to predominantly full DR and this development will continue over the coming years.

The trust in nearing completion of it brand new purpose built, state of the art Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, which should open next year. The new hospital will offer maternity, children's and inpatient adult services to half a million people. The hospital will deliver consultant inpatient medicine with dedicated diagnostic capability for emergency patients.

About us

We have recently expanded our radiographer numbers resulting in a dedicated team keen to welcome and support new talent. You will be expected to participate in our busy Out of Hours and seven-day service and to work from any of our sites including City Hospital in Birmingham, Sandwell General Hospital

We understand that the early days in a new job can be daunting so we allocate all new starters with a buddy/ mentor.

On your first day you will be met by either your buddy or one of our Superintendent Radiographer and this will be an opportunity to complete any necessary paperwork. We will then expect you to complete a 8 - 12 week induction period, where we will allocate time in all general area, after those weeks if you are happy, we will sign off your competency sheets.

  • All round experience of plain film, fluoroscopy and mobile radiography
  • Evidence of current or anticipated Continuing Professional Development to Health Professions Council (HPC) standard

Qualifications

  • Diploma of the College of Radiographers or BSc(Hons) Radiography or pending
  • Current HPC Registration or pending

Knowledge

Essential

  • Must have expertise within Radiography that is underpinned by theoretical study
  • Must have developed a knowledge of a range of procedures including plain film, fluoroscopy and mobile radiography
  • Must be able to undertake Quality Assurance checks of equipment on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as appropriate
  • Must be able to adapt routine techniques when necessary, in line with previous experience, in order to produce diagnostic images
  • Must have a working knowledge of IR(ME)R Regulations, Health & Safety and Confidentiality of Information
  • Must have a working knowledge of electronic Patient Management and Radiology Information systems
