Job summary
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and hardworking doctors to join our newly established JSD higher posts at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals. These are fixed term post for 12 months in the first instance with the possibility of longer term opportunities within the Trust subject to performance and progress.

Main duties of the job
The successful appointees would be expected to be a fully integrated part of the General surgical team at middle grade level.
Supervision of junior doctors would be expected with involvement in local education programmes.
Full integration in the elective and emergency upper GI, lower GI and general surgical teams services is key to this post.
About us
We will open the brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in 2023. This new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.
The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services which will support the new Emergency Department with dedicated imaging facility and Assessment Units. It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.
The Trust is a key partner with the local commissioning group and the local authorities in the Right Care Right Here programme which seeks to deliver a redevelopment of local health services. The programme includes one of the largest investments in the UK with new facilities in both the acute and community sectors. Included within this is the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

This post would be at ST3 level (ie 4 years post qualification) and whilst not approved training posts we would mirror the training opportunities to those given to training post holders. The JSD higher posts will allow you to consolidate your surgical experience in a supportive environment, giving you wide ranging clinical exposure and training in a progressive Trust that has won numerous national and local awards. We would be keen to work with successful applicants to design rotations that would provide exposure to different specialties with in surgery to suit their training needs and career aspirations.
We envisage that the JSD (Higher) would act as a stepping stone into specialty training, and in the past years the post holders have successfully secured the national training numbers. The successful candidates will have at least 4 years experience post qualification, full GMC Registration with a license to practice and previous UK experience.
