Job summary

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and hardworking doctor to join our Neonatal Department as Junior Specialist Doctor (JSD) at City Hospital, Birmingham. This post will be six months in the first instance starting from 7th Sep 2022 with the possibility of longer term opportunities within the Trust subject to performance, progress and vacancies. There is also a possibility to rotate to General Paediatrics if there are vacancies. The JSD post will allow you to consolidate your experience in a supportive environment, giving you wide ranging clinical exposure and training. You would receive the same training opportunities as the specialist trainees and have a named educational supervisor. We would support you to work towards your chosen career path.

The successful candidate will have completed foundation year training or equivalent, have an interest in General Paediatrics and Neonates and full GMC Registration with a license to practice. Recent experience in Paediatrics or Neonates is desirable but not essential. Knowledge of the workings of the NHS is preferable.

Main duties of the job

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, with strong links to the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Health Education England.

Neonatal services are part of the Maternity and Perinatal Medicine directorate. The neonatal unit is a designated Level 2/Local Neonatal Unit with 29 designated cots (5 intensive care cots, 5 high dependency cots and 19 special care cots) and designated transitional care unit on the postnatal ward. The neonatal unit accepts babies from 27 weeks gestation upwards (including most congenital anomalies) and provides short-term intensive care for up to 48 hours. Babies started on Nitric oxide/HFOV and on Therapeutic Hypothermia are transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit after stabilisation. The unit undertakes high activity levels of about 3000 days intensive/high dependency care, 5270 special care days and 3200 transitional care days per year. The maternity department caters for approximately 6000 deliveries per year and has a dedicated fetal medicine unit.
