Following significant investment in our service, the Nutrition and Dietetics Service at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is excited to recruit a clinical specialist to work within our community dietetic services as part of a specialist community dietetic rotation. The team has strong links with the specialist MDTs and the rotation will work across a variety of specialisms offering the opportunity to work in the areas of HIV; or with complex nutritional support patients on a rehabilitation or palliation care pathway at home; in healthcare centres, care homes and at GP clinics. Each rotation will include a case load of home enteral tube fed patients across a range of care pathways.
We envisage that the successful postholder will rotate on a yearly basis into new areas offering strong developmental opportunities and continued professional development. We are supportive of receiving applicants from those seeking to work full, or part-time.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an innovative individual who is motivated by MDT working and keen to work with our diverse population in a community dietetics service with rotations into specialist services. Candidates will be joining a service at a time of considerable opportunity. You will need to use highly developed interpersonal skills to foster strong relationships with a range of key stakeholders.
You would be joining our ambitious and forward-thinking therapies structure and community dietetics team and the duties of this exciting role will include support of service users in their own homes, care homes and outpatient settings in Sandwell and West Birmingham.
Our community team is based at Victoria Health Centre and you will carry a specialist community caseload and complete an attached rotation in one of 3 specialist areas.
About us
The Nutrition and Dietetics Department is a growing team of 35; based across Sandwell and West Birmingham. We have regular departmental meetings, clinical supervision sessions and education meetings. Continuing professional development is promoted and supported.
The Department trains student dietitians from Coventry and Birmingham City Universities across the full range ofplacements.
There is excellent administrative support, IT facilities and access to modern Trust library facilities.

To promote the nutrition and dietetic profession through:
- Service developments in collaboration with team lead/line manager and the dietetic service.
- Being involved with the supervision and support of other dietitians, dietetic assistants as well and student training
You will be working within a close and supportive team which covers a number of clinical specialties and the opportunity to engage in service evaluation and improvement.
The rotations would be as follows:
Strongly aligns with the HIV MDT and would include 3 specialist HIV MDT clinics that are ran on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning working with service users who have had a diagnosis of HIV; working with charitable organisations and supporting service users with their nutritional needs in addition to the ownership of community caseload including home enterally tube fed patients.
- Complex Nutritional Support Rehabilitation Rotation
A rotation with a strong focus on supporting the hospital to home pathway and attendance at the trusts in-house primary/secondary care nutrition MDT supporting best interest decisions with tube feeding and a caseload of patients requiring complex nutritional support including a likely focus on those with neurological/ stroke diagnoses; outpatient clinics and supporting service users within a community mental health inpatient unit. The role will involve supporting patients transitioning from paediatric to adult care; or supporting those with dysphagia, or who have improving dysphagia.
- Complex Nutrition Support Rotation
A rotation with a strong focus on supporting the hospital to home pathway; working with local care providers and surrounding trusts such as Queen Elizabeth Hospital and New Cross Hospital for patients with complex diagnosis including Oncological diagnosis (i.e. head and neck cancers, Upper Gastro-intestinal cancers) or Motor Neurone disease and attendance at local specialist MDTs in relation to these conditions. The rotations will include working in a range of settings and may include working with patients throughout their treatment and recovery; or from diagnosis through to palliation.
We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in community dietetics and in supporting service users with evidence of strong clinical skills and motivation to continue to achieve personal development as a dietitian. Flexibility and the ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is essential. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathetic nature. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an MDT as a specialist dietitian, and have the confidence to present and discuss your professional opinion with colleagues.
With a varied and interesting caseload, this post requires a dynamic, assertive person with an excellent breadth of knowledge and good rapport building skills
