Job summary

Applications are invited for the position of Senior Glaucoma Fellow at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, City Hospital, Birmingham.

This Fellowship is for 12 months and provides comprehensive training in the medical and surgical management of complex glaucoma. The fellowship post is under the supervision of Mr Velota Sung Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Maged Nessim Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Imran Masood, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Pandey, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Mr Khalili Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. This is a busy post in tertiary referral center and is suitable for candidates who are near to completion or those who have completed the Higher Specialist Training programme (or equivalent) in Ophthalmology. The candidate will also take part in a 1:10 out of hours on call (5pm to 8.30pm), and 1:4 Glaucoma triaging/advice.

Main duties of the job

The Fellows will be exposed to all forms of complex glaucoma and will gain significant hands on training in the management of glaucoma using a variety of laser and surgical techniques. The unit is equipped with the latest imaging devices including linear UBM and Spectral domain OCT. Glaucoma is managed using the latest laser and surgical techniques including SLT, endoscopic cyclodiode, MIGS surgery (Istent, and Xen, Hydrus, Preserflo), Mitomycin Trabeculectomy and Aqueous shunts. In addition a large number of complex cataract surgeries are carried out in angle closure glaucoma patients including goniosynechiolysis. The unit has a significant interest in novel MIGS procedures.

There are other ongoing research projects in glaucoma, anterior segment imaging in angle closure glaucoma, and various multicentre clinical trials.

Previous Fellowship / ASTO experience in Glaucoma and Anterior Segment surgery would be an advantage. An established research interest within the field of glaucoma is essential. Due to the complex surgical nature of the post it is essential that the candidate is a highly proficient in cataract surgery and has also had previous glaucoma surgery experience.

Candidates should be in possession of Part 2 FRCOphth or equivalent. Suitably qualified candidates from overseas with appropriate GMC registration will be considered. The post does not carry Postgraduate Dean's approval or ST training recognition.
