Job summary

The Nutrition and Dietetics Service at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is excited to recruit a Dietitian to join our growing team.

This is an exciting new postat an exciting time for Dietetics, Allied Health Professionals and Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS trust as we seek to prepare for our move to the brand new Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital in 2022 bringing lots of opportunities for future development.

We are looking for an innovative individual who is motivated by MDT working and keen to work in a growing department. Candidates will be joining a service at a time of considerable opportunity.

Main duties of the job

You would be joining our ambitious and forward-thinking therapies structure and the duties of this exciting role will include management of service users in an inpatient and outpatient setting. This is a varied post and will likely include the opportunity to work across the acute and community settings and management of outpatients will be within a community setting as we seek to optimise patient care by moving our outpatient services closer to the patient, to optimise their experience.

About us

The Nutrition and Dietetics Department is a team of 27; based across Sandwell and West Birmingham. We have regular departmental meetings, clinical supervision sessions and education meetings. Continuing professional development is promoted and supported.

The Department trains student dietitians from Coventry and Birmingham City Universities across the full range ofplacements.

There is excellent administrative support, good IT facilities and access to modern Trust library facilities.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS trust is located near major road and rail networks with easy access to Birmingham. There are a wide range of leisure facilities locally.

You would be joining the trust at an exciting time as we prepare for a move to the brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

Job description

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL

1 To undertake nutritional assessment of referred patients to develop individual nutritional plans taking into account the patients medical diagnosis and condition.

2 To arrange follow up visits on an outpatient basis as appropriate, to facilitate understanding of the condition and motivation to make dietary changes required to optimise health.

3 To liaise with and advise the Catering Department of any special requirements for individual patients to enable their nutritional care plans to be fulfilled.

4 To assist in the preparation and evaluation of diet sheets, teaching materials and nutritional information.

5 To keep Senior Dietitians and the Dietetic Service Manager informed of all operational matters on a regular basis.

6 To work as a member of the dietetic team supporting each other and covering during staff absence within clinical competence as requested.

7 Communicate effectively and efficiently with colleagues within and outside the department to facilitate effective patient care and multidisciplinary working.

ADMINISTRATION AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

1 To plan and organise own caseload and other work commitments with guidance from Senior Dietitians to ensure optimal prioritisation of clinical workload.

2 Keep dietetic records and statistics in accordance with department policy.

3 Practice in accordance with department and Trust Policies and Guidelines seeking clarification from Senior Dietitians to ensure consistent practices within the department.

4 Participate in dietetic meetings, clinical governance initiatives, and department and Trust Clinical Effectiveness Meetings.

5 To undertake a personal development review with the line manager on an annual basis.

TRAINING

1 In consultation with line manager identify personal training needs and undertake relevant CPD opportunities from a variety of sources in order to widen and develop professional skills and knowledge. Maintain a personal record of such CPD undertakings.

2 Participate in planning delivery and evaluation of education sessions to health professionals, catering staff, patients and their carers. Seek guidance from Senior Dietitians to ensure content and method of delivery is best suited to target audience.

3 Shadow Senior Dietitians within their specialist areas to widen knowledge and clinical competence.

4 Assist Senior Dietitians in training Student Dietitians and the ongoing nutritional training of nursing and other health professionals within the Trust.
