An exciting opportunity has arisen for two experienced Medical Engineering Technician to join friendly Medical Engineering Team at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust.

The successful applicant will be responsible for contributing to the transformation of services and contribute to the wider organisational strategies in preparation for our move into the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) which opens in the summer of 2022. The Medical Engineering Department will be moving into brand new state of the art facilities located on the 4th Floor of the new Hospital.

The vacancy has arisen due to the re-organisation of responsibilities with Estates and expansion within the Medical Engineering Department including the retained estate and further development of our community services to provide our vision of integrated care.

The successful candidate must have excellent IT skills including knowledge of medical device integration.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Technician will undertake a wide range of technical engineering work within the Medical Engineering Department. He/she will have technical responsibility for a broad range of work, and will be expected to work to a high level of skill and resolve complex technical issues. He/she will carry out acceptance testing, installation, repair, planned maintenance and disposal of medical equipment within the Trust. This includes highly specialist support of complex diagnostic, therapeutic and life support equipment, such as anaesthetic systems, ultrasound equipment, infusion devices, endoscopy washers, patient monitors, neonatal incubators and operating tables. To assist with the integration of medical devices to the Trusts Electronic Patient Records and PACS systems.

He/she will participate in the Departments on-call system and should be able to attend site within 1 hour from home and if using a motor vehicle it must be properly insured for work use.

About us

The successful candidate will commission, service and repair a range of the Trusts biomedical equipment including anaesthetic machines, ventilators, infusion devices, endoscopic and theatre equipment as well as laboratory, ophthalmology and community based equipment .

We are a team of 19 members of experienced staff.

He/she will work under the technical direction of the Technical Supervisor. He/she will co-operate in resolving issues of regulatory compliance affecting devices within the section. He/she will liase closely with the Management Team to develop and improve the service provided within the workshop. He/she will establish and maintain effective professional links with clinical users of the service. He/she will maintain an accurate and up to date inventory of equipment and maintain service records. He/she will undertake any necessary training as deemed appropriate.

The role will include being part of the on-call rota.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To be managerially responsible to the Operational Manager, Medical Engineering.
  2. To be technically accountable to the Technical Supervisor.
  3. Responsible to the Consultant Medical Staff for all aspects of his/her work
  4. which affect the treatment and welfare of patients.
  5. Responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance, servicing and calibration of medical devices, following manufactures procedures and the Departments Performance Verification Procedures (PVP).
  6. Repair of faulty medical equipment, including detailed fault finding, using service manuals (on-line, electronic or hard copy), diagnostic flow charts and test equipment. This will include both workshop repairs and on-site repair of fixed or larger equipment items.
  7. To work with and assist manufacturers in determining the cause of equipment failure by sharing local clinical experience and knowledge, performing diagnostic tests required to isolate faults, running diagnostic software and examining equipment error logs.
  8. To supervise external contractors carrying out equipment installation, commissioning, service or repair activities.
  9. To actively review quality and standards of workmanship to ensure compliance with current advice, legislation and best practice. To contribute to the Departments Performance Verification Procedures, both in terms of development of new procedures and in refining and improving existing ones.
  10. To take a pro-active approach to controlling maintenance costs.
  11. Ensuring the clinical safety of medical devices, in consultation with clinical staff and manufacturers, to ensure that they are appropriately commissioned, programmed and set-up.
  12. Responsible for ordering of replacement parts necessary for the repair and servicing of medical devices within the section and maintenance of stock levels of workshop consumables.
  13. To arrange contract and ad-hoc call-outs as necessary, where repair of a device is either uneconomic or not possible in-house. To keep abreast of manufacturers response times and ensure users are fully informed of the status of the call.
