Job summary

A number of exciting opportunities have arisen within the Trust for floating fixed term trainees to support with vacancies on the junior doctor rotation. We are looking to recruit versatile and adaptable individuals to join the teams in the Trust.

This position offers a rewarding opportunity to gain relevant psychiatry experience at trainee level in order to support an application for the training scheme or substantive Specialty Doctor.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic individual that works to the highest standards, is able to think autonomously and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Post: CT Trainee General Adult Psychiatry

Clinical Supervisor/Trainer: Dr Ekwere George Umoh

Location: St Martins Hospital, Littlebourne Road Canterbury Kent.

Service Line: Acute/ Community Recovery Service Line

DESCRIPTION OF THE SERVICE

In-patient Ward (Samphire/Fern Wards, St Martins Hospital)

Samphire Ward is a 15 bed Male only and Fern is a female only 18 bed acute psychiatric ward that admits patients from North and East Kent with population of approximately 350,000. There will also be the opportunity to enhance ones experience of Mental Health Act work.

* Community Mental Health Team (Based at Laurel House Canterbury). This service provides community mental health care for working age adults with diverse psychiatric disorders. The community mental health team aspect of this post involves some domiciliary work, community Mental Health Act assessments and also includes some CPA work.

* Please note that this is an Inpatient job - the community component would be dependent on training needs of individual trainees.

As well as the above, the trainee will be involved in out of hours on-call commitments for North East Kent Locality.

Placement

This placement offers ample exposure to management audit and leadership activities. There is a possibility of gaining some medico-legal experience. Research activity is also encouraged and supported.

Training Objectives

The training objectives will be formally agreed at the start of the post during clinical supervision. The objectives will reflect the requirements of the current Royal College Psychiatric Curriculum, commensurate with Core Training and any specific requirements arising from ARCP outcomes.

Educational/Clinical Supervision

One hour of weekly supervision will be provided by Dr Umoh

Clinical supervision (involving direct and close supervision or discussion) will be additionally provided, tailored to the competency level and experience of the trainee by Dr Umoh. In the absence of the consultant this will be provided by the covering consultant.

Tutorial Supervision

Core Trainees within the Scheme will be meeting the KMPT Tutor, as advised, to ensure training objectives, progression within the assessment Programme (WPBAs) and completion of the Structured Assessments required for the ARCP.

Psychotherapy Training

Trainees are encouraged to contact the psychotherapy department for further training or approach the clinical psychologist/psychotherapist attached to the team to discuss available options/opportunities. They are encouraged to actively participate in the weekly Balint group from 9.00-10.00 am every Tuesday. There is a fortnightly reflective practice on the ward and Trainees would be encouraged to attend.

Library

A library is available at Kent and Canterbury Hospital and Maidstone Hospital. In addition, trainees will have access to the online Athens library and can register to use the library at the Post-graduate Academic Centre in Maidstone Hospital.

Audit

The CT will be supported to participate & complete audit under the supervision of Dr Umoh and may have the opportunity to supervise the development and delivery of audit by junior trainees or non-medical colleagues.

Teaching and Training

Opportunities for the CT to gain experience of developing, delivering and evaluating teaching and training will be considered according to their specific needs.

In this post the core trainee has opportunity of organising and delivering teaching sessions to junior trainees during the weekly Thursday Journal Club.

Induction and Mandatory Training

All trainees are offered an induction programme at the start of the post. It is also a requirement to maintain necessary mandatory training including in areas such as breakaway, basic life support, CPA and Child Protection.

On Call

The CT will participate in the junior doctor oncall rota.
