Job summary

Team lead ICU and Surgery Physiotherapist:

Based overlooking the south coast, soon to be moving into new, modern facilities, this is a fantastic opportunity to further develop the excellent ICU and Surgery Physiotherapy service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

This hospital overlooks the pier, the vibrant Kemp Town and is within walking distance from the lively Brighton centre. Trains to and from London are frequent and the countryside is a mere 10 minutes out of Brighton.

The 3Ts new ICU will provide excellent care and rehabilitation to medical, surgical, major trauma, neurosurgical and vascular patients in our newly designed ICU 55 bed unit. We work closely with a variety of professions including SLT, dietitians, psychologist, pharmacists, OTs as well as our nursing and medical colleagues. The Digestive Disease ward is a 70 bed unit caring for upper and lower GI patients with complex medical conditions and specialised tertiary services.

You will be able to develop and shape new ICU follow up services and participate in research if available and you will have the opportunity to work alongside CCOT in both ICU and on the surgical wards.

You will be responsible for managing your own team and our rehabilitation assistants in Critical care. You will be shaping in service training programmes, on call updates and proficiency's using face to face, digital and simulation based techniques.

Main duties of the job

Provide professional clinical leadership as a highly specialist practitioner within the field of Critical care and cardio-respiratory and surgical Physiotherapy. To lead and guide at a highly specialist level, the process of critical care rehabilitation in complex medical, surgical, trauma and neurology patients.

The person should be able to lead, guide and motivate the team and bring with them a dynamic and visionary approach, and the drive to bring about change and service improvements.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential with a keenness to develop your staff and yourself. You should have experience of supervision of staff and students, multidisciplinary teaching and data collection, audit and the monitoring and implementation of clinical governance.

Management:

  1. To act as an expert resource for all members of the multi-professional team and liaise with community care regarding transfer of patients to rehabilitation services as appropriate.
  1. As a line manager to have overall responsibility for the daily operational management, supervision and co-ordination of the inpatient Critical care and Surgical team across the Trust including staff appraisal, performance management, informal grievance and disciplinary actions if and when necessary, with support from the Heads of Service
  1. To assist the Heads of Service in overseeing the application of clinical governance, including the implementation of clinical risk, clinical audit and evidence based practice.
  1. To provide student clinical placements in varying formats within the Critical care and surgical service, including induction and teaching sessions, and supervision.
  2. To lead by example and ensure that information regarding service provision, adaptation, and change is cascaded throughout Critical care and Physiotherapy service and across multidisciplinary teams Trust wide.

Clinical:

  1. Perform a comprehensive physical and functional assessment, in order to develop problem lists and treatment plans taking into account the complexity of the physiological status of the patient. This will include seriously unwell trauma, neurosurgery, surgical and medical patients
  2. To have overall responsibility and accountability for physio-therapeutic management and delivery of patient care in the Critical care and Surgical speciality
  3. To be consulted frequently for expert advice from Senior and Junior team members as well as the inter-professional teams and to input into physiotherapy trust-wide programmes
  4. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable, as an autonomous practitioner, for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.
  5. To ensure high standards of clinical care, and be responsible for ensuring all staff within the team adhere to Trust, Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Intensive Care Society, National tracheotomy safety project, ACPRC, BACCN, NORF and Departmental standards of care.
  6. To be highly competent in the use of mechanical and non- invasive ventilation. To be highly competent in ventilator and tracheotomy weaning often in situations where conflicting evidence is present.
  7. To co-ordinate interventions which may include other disciplines e.g. safe discharge/transfer planning meetings, case conferences, multi-disciplinary meetings to advise and educate patients, carers, relatives and other health professionals
  8. To understand the psychology of acute illness and recovery from critical illness and be able to provide support, information and appropriate referrals to patients, family, carers and staff.
  9. To manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times and ensure clinical risk is effectively managed.
  10. To maintain professionalism in public, ward and rehabilitation centre areas and to ensure all members of staff do the same.
  11. To maintain patient confidentiality and dignity at all times and support equality and diversity.
  12. To work a 7 day Rostered system when it is instigated.
