The South West Yorkshire Partnership
NHS Foundation Trust came into operation in April 2002, bringing together NHS
services for the local authority areas of Barnsley, Wakefield, Calderdale and
Kirklees.
The post is based at Beechdale on
The Dales in Calderdale. This ward provides care for older people experiencing
mental illness.
As a physiotherapy team we support
individuals with their physical health during their admission to hospital and
the senior physiotherapy assistant will play a vital role in this. Experience
of working in a Care/ NHS setting alongside experience working with Mental
Health, the elderly or Learning disabilities is essential.
The successful applicant will work
closely with the ward physiotherapists and MDT helping to provide therapy to a
small caseload across the wards. The post holder will be expected to work
independently at times once they have completed a thorough induction. Roles and
responsibilities of the position will include implementation of rehabilitation /
exercise programs, exercise and education classes with the physiotherapist and
review of mobility equipment/aids with the support of the physiotherapist.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for someone with
knowledge and enthusiasm in caring for people with mental health problems. You
will need to be a versatile, adaptable team player who has good organisational
skills. You will be required to use a PC and so a knowledge of IT would be
beneficial. There is a strong
network of allied health professionals across the Trust with clear professional
leadership and regular supervision within the profession. You will be supported
to develop your own CPD, and we encourage reflective practice and accessing regular
in service/external training.

Under the supervision/direction of
registered health care

delegated interventions and care tasks, for which they have received training,
seeking support as and when necessary.
As part of a healthcare team,

Demonstrating sensitivity,
empathy and active listening skills, maintain positive and appropriate
relationships with people at all times.
Demonstrate an understanding of the
care and treatment programmes

To follow a care plan, advise
and guide service users, family and carers in following prescribed
interventions and make the appropriate adjustments within
own competence and skill set and be able to communicate any changes
to service users and
registered health care professionals.
Be required to concentrate for
periods of time, depending upon the care intervention/care plan This may include areas of work requiring physical
effort, with regard to risk, following the risk assessment
and health & safety.
Exercise
a degree of independence, initiative and judgement and consider
different approaches when delivering tasks. Assess situations, eg following falls prevention
guidance identify and resolve potential problems, within own competence.
Ensure the
care experienced
is positive

Assisting in the organising
and participating in a range of therapeutic groups and activities as delegated
by the registered practitioner working within own competence and skill set.
Apply
basic knowledge of longer-term health conditions, within the remit of care
planning, providing advice, support and feedback to a registered professional.
Undertake the physical aspects
of care eg, moving and handling of service users. Use items of equipment in
delivering care eg, hoists, wheelchairs etc. (as appropriate to the role),
ensuring appropriate instruction on their use has been received.
Assist in dealing with
verbal/physical aggression using de-escalation techniques, this may include the
need for RRPI techniques (as appropriate to the ward or community based role
and in line with Trust policy and training).
Attend to the service users
personal care needs as and when required.
Participate in a flexible
rostering arrangement providing /7 day care (as appropriate to the
role/service).
