South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Stop Smoking Advisor to work in the NHS Barnsley Talking Therapies Service. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our motivated team who are enthusiastic about improving the health of people living in Barnsley. You will be a member of the NHS Barnsley Talking Therapies Team however you will have close links and will be supported by the Barnsley Smokefree Service also. Working for the service is a rewarding role & an opportunity to join a thriving & friendly team.

We are seeking for applicants either with stop smoking advising qualifications & experience or be willing to undertake the Level 2 Stop Smoking Skills training , with knowledge of supporting people though a combination of behaviour change & the use of pharmacotherapy in a variety of intervention settings. You will have experience of delivering various treatment intervention, on a one to one basis. We also encourage applicants to apply who do not have the relevant qualifications & are willing to undertake them.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will deliver stop smoking intervention to clients who have been assessed by NHS Barnsley Talking Therapies Services and have been offered therapy within the service to address their common mental health problem. This involves delivering evidence-based stop smoking specialist behavioural support which combines pharmacotherapy treatment regime delivered as one to one or group basis. Interventions are delivered face to face, virtual or telephone support. You will work with the NHS BTT clinician to ensure clients can access stop smoking support.

Your role requires to maintain accurate patient records, responsibility managing & coordinating assigned patient caseloads clinics & administrative duties. You will have the ability to navigate various computer systems have excellent communication & interpersonal skills along with the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, service users & carers. Working patterns include 9am-5pm weekdays with the expectation that on one day you will work until 12-8pm. Further information contact Victoria Greensmith 01226 644900.

Manage and organise their time and activities to give smokers support to stop smoking, this may be face to face in group settings or one to ones and over the telephone.

Develop and maintain relationships with people who are most at risk of poor health outcomes with NHS BTT.

Build up and maintain knowledge of contacts and agencies within the community.

Maintain accurate client electronic records, using Quit Manager, in line with Trust guidelines.

Communicate with individuals about health and health improvement:

Provide information to clients, who are already accessing therapy within NHS BTT, about stopping smoking and health related issues; Enable people to develop their knowledge and skills about health and well-being; and

Signpost individuals to other agencies for information, support and resources as necessary

Enable people to change their behaviour to improve their health:

  • Help people to understand how smoking affects their health.
  • Help people to make a personal health plan which includes changes they want to make.
  • Support people in achieving their personal health plan by offering encouragement and motivation on a weekly basis;
  • Provide weekly support to clients to maintain their behaviour change.

Managing Self:

Participate in clinical supervision and apply continuous reflection eg, values, priorities, interests and effectiveness and synthesise new knowledge into practice.

Keep up to date with changes in operational procedures and developments.

Seek advice and support from supervisor/manager whenever necessary.

Act within own sphere of competence at all times.

Management Supervision and Support:

Participate and work with both NHS BTT and the Smokefree Barnsley Service to deliver the KPIs/objectives.

Develop own knowledge & skills in order to provide information to others to support their understanding.

Participate in team KPIs and work towards departmental objectives/deadlines.

Manage and organise own time and activities to support individuals in the community:

  • Plan own time and activities to meet the reasonable needs of individuals in the community.
  • Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales referrals from NHS BTT clinicians.
  • Keep adequate electronic records of the work carried out with clients, using Quit Manager and SystmOne.
  • Alert specialist advisors or line manager to any issues in work (including concerns about individuals or work in the community) and maintain confidentiality;
  • Actively contribute to ways in which local services can be improved to improve the health and well-being of the local community/barriers that individuals are experiencing in changing their behaviour.
  • Contribute to the development of the Stop Smoking targets and any plans that may be developed by attending meetings as appropriate with co-workers and sharing information;
