An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as an Assistant Psychologist within the Barnsley Memory Service, based at The Summer Lane Centre, Wombwell.

The service provides consultation, assessment, treatment, and psychological interventions for people with cognitive impairment related to dementia. The role will involve working as part of the multi-disciplinary team to develop and implement behavioural interventions in the community and into care homes to support people with dementia. There will also be opportunity to gain experience in other aspects of the service such as providing dementia assessments and running psychosocial groups.

The post is a 1wte post for a fixed term of 1 year with working pattern of 37.5hrs per week. The successful candidate will support all aspects of the psychological provision across the Memory Service and will be supervised by the qualified Clinical Psychologist within the team.

Main duties of the job

The role will primarily involve supporting the delivery of non-pharmacological and behavioural approaches to behaviours that challenge. This work will include conducting assessments, information gathering, behavioural analysis, developing psychological formulations, and working alongside colleagues within the team to improve the quality of life for people with dementia. There will be opportunity to develop other skills within the role such as neuropsychological testing and differential diagnosis of dementia, formulating using psychological models, and service evaluation.

Successful candidates will have a BPS accredited Psychology degree and should have experience of working with people with mental health problems or other disabilities. Experience of working within the NHS is desirable as is experience with standardised psychometric assessment tools. Proven experience in doing research would be appreciated and valued.

JOB SUMMARY

To support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients within the service, across all sectors of care; providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist, working independently according to a plan agreed with a HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist and within the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures. To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, and development of audit and / or research projects, teaching and project work.

ORGANISATIONAL CHART

KEY RESULT AREAS:

Clinical:

1. To undertake protocol based psychological assessments of clients applying psychological theory, including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care.

2. To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and / or management of a clients problems, under the supervision of a HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist.

3. To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups or clinical projects.

4. To work with other staff to assess community patients and review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.

5. To assist in the development of a psychological based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place.

6. To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.

7. To respect diversity. To treat everyone with dignity and respect and act in ways that acknowledge and recognise peoples expressed beliefs, preferences and choices.

IT responsibilities (clinical)

1. To use highly developed IT skills.

2. To access knowledge through Internet searches (e.g. Psych.Lit, Medline) to keep up to date with clinical and professional development

3. For the preparation and presentation of materials of effective teaching and training (e.g. power point, graphic representations) to record and analyse data for research and audit (e.g. databases, spreadsheets, statistical analysis packages e.g. SPPS).

4. To create graphs or charts to collate or summarise data on individual interventions or treatment programmes.

5. To assist in producing visual or material or user friendly information for interventions with clients.

Teaching, training and supervision

1. In common with all HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines.

2. To gain wider experience of professional psychology within the NHS over and above that provided within the principal service area where the post holder is employed.

3. To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties.

4. To contribute to the training and support of other staff, working within the Service in psychological care.

Management, recruitment and service development

1. To assist in the design and implementation of service development projects with the service as required.

2. To attend meetings in which service developments are planned and discussed.

Research and service evaluation

1. To assist in the design and implementation of audit and research projects.

2. To undertake data collection, analysis, the production of reports and summaries, using IT and statistical programmes.
